When a woman is young she can get away with practically wearing anything and still look super cute. But as women get older they have to pay attention to what they wear a little more closely.
You don’t want to pick styles that are too young – or too old. Here are some style tips for women over 40 that will keep you looking classy and beautiful all at once. For starters:
DON’T: Wear oversized prints
They’re loud, striking, and fun. Which means they usually work for a younger crowd.
They’re tricky to pull off, and it won’t really make you look sophisticated. Not to mention that it makes you look larger all over.
DO: Wear small prints
If you want prints, consider opting for smaller sizes. She looks absolutely stunning with her cinched waist, lovely dress, and stylish sunglasses.
She exudes class and style, and it’s clear that she’s proof that 40 is indeed the new 20.
DON’T: Wear dated jeans
Saggy jeans can be unflattering at any age, but certainly don’t to any favors to a woman’s figure over age 40.
Instead of showing off your figure, they can make it appear shapeless and unattractive. It’s best to avoid saggy jeans if you want to look your best.
DO: Wear modern style jeans
Go out and buy a really nice pair of jeans that fit you well. Rock skinny jeans if it looks good on you.
Accessorize appropriately and pair with comfortable sandals for an all day casual walk.
DON’T: Wear boxy styles
It can be tempting to just grab an oversized jacket or sweater when you’re in a hurry, but it’s important to resist that temptation. Oversized outerwear can make you look shorter and hide your lovely curves.
You’re stronger than the temptation to throw on whatever is convenient, so take the time to choose outerwear that flatters your figure.
DO: Create shape
A white tunic top and a small jacket that hugs your curves (but not too much) looks so much better. A moto jacket works wonders for this look. The goal is to show your curves so go for it.
DON’T: Wear dated shoes
Old shoes are comfortable and perfect for those quick lazy errands. But you will look older thanks to that dated pair. Do yourself another favor and get rid of them.
You can buy new ones for decent prices if you shop around.
DO: Wear updated shoes
The footwear you choose can make or break your entire look, so it’s important to take the time to choose wisely.
Consider checking out the latest trends to see which ones match your taste and style. Investing in a good pair of shoes or sandals is always a smart move, as they can elevate any outfit.
DO: Wear stylish sunglasses
A nice pair of sunglasses, decent ones that fit your face, can make you look ten years younger. Plus it does protect the eyes for those sunny days.
And you can check out that cute guy without being noticed.
DON’T: Wear bulky jewelry
While bulky, colorful jewelry may be bold and attention-grabbing, it’s not exactly current or trendy. The only time you might be able to get away with wearing this type of jewelry is if you’re attending a 70’s themed party, but otherwise it’s best to leave it in the jewelry box.
Instead, opt for more modern, minimalist pieces that will complement your outfit without overwhelming it.
DO: Wear dainty, modern jewelry
Consider choosing smaller, daintier necklaces for a more classic and feminine look. These types of necklaces are versatile and will go with most of your clothes.
Remember that small details can make a big difference, so don’t overlook the power of a delicate necklace to elevate your outfit.
DON’T: Wear handkerchief sweaters
Handkerchief sweaters may be free-flowing and colorful, but they do nothing to highlight your curves and can make your outfit look dated. Instead of choosing this type of sweater, opt for something that will show off your figure and flatter your features.
A well-fitted sweater or top can make a much bigger impact and have others appreciating your style.
DO: Wear fitted blazer with shorter hemline
This one is bright, bold, and beautiful and the fit just works so well to compliment her body. It’s simple but fresh and definitely modern.
It brings out her curves without hugging the body too much.
DON’T: Wear horizontal stripes
While horizontal stripes may be cute, chic, and sophisticated, that doesn’t mean they will always look good on everyone. Even celebrities and influencers can sometimes have a difficult time pulling off horizontal stripes, as they can have the opposite effect of what you’re going for.
It’s important to consider your body type and personal style before deciding to incorporate horizontal stripes into your outfit.
DO: Wear diagonal stripes
Now if you want stripes, go diagonal. The lines flow with the body better, and even accentuates your curves.
It’s eye catching and definitely sexy, especially if you can rock it with confidence. Angles and curves!
DON’T: Overdo the details
Overdoing details makes you look like you’re trying to hard. Not exactly a good look especially at your age. You may end up looking frumpy and even unshapely at times.
DO: Go with “less is more” look
Indeed, simplicity when tastefully executed works so well. The slimming effect of the longer cardigan makes her look modern and sophisticated.
Modern jeans and shoes complete this stunning look.
DON’T: Wear oversized floral prints
Another loud pattern that screams “look at me”, without actually asking for compliments. It’s loose and flowy but doesn’t exactly look good for a lady in her 40s and above.
The shoes you choose can also date your look.
DO: Wear smaller floral with V-neck
This is how you do floral. It’s in a darker shade which helps with a slimming effect.
The V neck line shows a bit of skin. It’s youthful, modern, and chic without looking like you’re trying to hard. Now this is cute!
DON’T: Wear bold matching sets
Another retro-vintage style that you should stay away from. Unless you want to look like a pro wrestler but really, we all know how staged that is.
And also, kids may mistake you for a walking carpet.
DO: Wear modern subtle sets
You can do matching but choose a softer finish. This one is modern and very cute. It’s feminine and even sophisticated for a matching set.
Those white sneakers are perfect.
DON’T: Wear pockets on hips or weird placement
Leopard print pockets and cuffs. It may seem attractive at first but all it does is scream weird and attention. It’s bold and contrasting for sure, something younger girls can get away with, but for an older woman it isn’t quite as cute.
DO: Add a “pop” without using pockets
A classic white button down works everyday, anywhere you go. Look how lovely it looks. And for that pop you want, grab a bag with a pattern that feels right. Like this leopard clutch bag.
DON’T: Overdo with large jewelry
Bold doesn’t always mean tasteful or flattering. It can even be distracting since it just begs to be stared at. What you want is subtle and stylish and this doesn’t give that vibe.
DO: Wear sophisticated jewelry
Now this is classic, impactful, and asks for attention the proper way. It’s also smaller without being hidden.
You can look amazing without looking like a teenager still searching for their identity.
