Just recently, for KING & COUNTRY teamed up with the legendary country star, Dolly Parton, and created a new rendition of “God Only Knows.” Their music video has been released and it’s sweeping the internet.
The original version of the tune already spent time as number 1 on Billboard’s Christian Airplay. However, the Australian duo came up with the idea to contact Parton in the hopes of collaborating with her for a remix. Much to their delight, she agreed to work with them on the project.
For KING & COUNTRY is a Grammy award-winning Christian pop group, made up of brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone.
It was after watching the Netflix movie Dumplin’ that they became inspired to work with Parton. Joel explained to the Tennessean in an interview:
“Everyone loves Dolly and then you watch ‘Dumplin’ and every song was like, ‘I love that song.’ At the end of the film, I thought, ‘I wonder if we just reached out.’”
Little did they know at the time, Parton had just come to the decision to work solely on “faith-based projects,” which is why she was surprised and pleased to be presented with the remake.
She told the Tennessean:
“I feel really blessed for ‘God Only Knows’ to have landed in my lap like it did. It’s like it fell from the sky. When I heard it, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, this is so good.’ When we got to singing it, oh it just sounded so good. And just working with them was such a blessing.”
“God Only Knows” is a powerful song and the new video is just as heart-pulling. It features the three musical artists experiencing different hardships in their lives.
Joel plays a struggling addict, while his brother Luke (in a separate scene) plays a person battling illness in a hospital bed.
The trio joins forces in singing “God Only Knows” as the video moves between their scenes. For KING & COUNTRY’S lyrics are even more impactful with the emotional storylines.

God only knows what they say about you
But there’s a kind of love that God only knows
Since the video was released it’s gone viral gathering millions of views online. The Smallbone brothers weren’t just thrilled when Parton agreed to work with them – as they put it, they were more than “honored.”
In an Instagram post, for KING & COUNTRY wrote:
“When we originally spoke to @dollyparton on the phone, her words were “When I first heard ‘God Only Knows’ I thought it was one of the best songs I’d ever heard. I feel that this is a good song for right now. I know that it touched me at a time when I needed to be lifted up.” and our jaws fell on the floor. The word ‘honored’ doesn’t quite say it when it comes to her collaborating with us.”
The first version of “God Only Knows” was released on the group’s 2018 album, Burn the Ships. While the original video has been watched more than 29 million times on YouTube – only time will tell if their new collaboration will surpass it.
