Everyone knows that dogs are man’s best friend. When it comes to their loyalty, mannerisms, and personalities other animals don’t come close to those of a dog. We rely on them as friends and family members because sometimes it’s as if they’re more human than animal. There are countless stories of dogs being heroes by sniffing out a gas leak, somehow understanding that their owner is having a seizure, or saving a family member or other family pet. This story is similar to the latter, this family dog potentially saved the life of a 7-month-old.
Benjamin and Hope Jordan had recently moved their family to Charleston, North Carolina and were looking for a nanny to care for their 7-month-old son, Finn. They did their homework and their research and found a woman who they thought would be a good fit to watch Finn. But over five months later things started to change.
The first signs that some thing was wrong, was in their dog Killian. The family described the black lab as friendly, lovable, and a want to be a lap dog. However, when the dog got around the nanny, he demonstrated different behaviors like bristling up, snarling when she got too close to the baby, and even putting herself between Finn and the nanny. It was as if Killian knew that this person shouldn’t be near such a vulnerable part of her family, and she was right.
After Benjamin and Hope started realizing that these behaviors were happening only around one person, they knew something was up. Killian had never acted this way towards anyone else in their family or circle of friends. “For him to show aggression towards anyone is a sign to use that something’s wrong because he never shows aggression,” said Benjamin regarding the family pet.
With the family’s suspicion growing and the trust in their dog, they decided that action needed to be taken to find out just what was really going on. It was Hope’s idea to place an iPhone under the couch in recording mode to capture at least the sound of anything out of the ordinary happening in their home. The phone recorded over 7 hours of material and what they heard on the recording was shocking.
In hopes words it was “a nightmare”.
“For nearly 7 hours my son cried nearly the entire time. She was cursing at him, calling him horrible names, and the thing about it, is that it came for no reason. He wasn’t acting up, he hadn’t been crying until she left him alone in his crib for hours, or of course, the physical abuse.” Hope explained of the recording. The couple suspected physical abuse after hearing what sounded like a slapping noise and sounds that alluded to the idea that Finn was being shaken.
The news that this had been going on was devastating, but the couple knew exactly what to do and reached out to the authorities. They can now take comfort in the fact that the babysitter in question is facing 1 to 3 years in prison for her actions. Without Killian’s warning, Benjamin and Hope may have discovered their sitters habits too late, and want this to be a lesson to parents everywhere- listen to your dog.
