Animals always find a way to be included in every activity. Just like the rest of us, they hate being left out! That’s why when a dog in India started showing up every Thursday to join the weekly kirtan ceremony at the local temple, no one was surprised.

They laughed at the dog’s eagerness to join in on the activities and quickly adopted him as part of the family.

One of the men who lives in the area, Sushma Date, even decided to film the dog singing along with the other people at the kirtan. He later posted about it on Twitter and the video he captured is pretty hilarious. It has since been retweeted thousands of times.

“This devout little dog belongs to my friend’s factory. Every Thursday evening, without fail, he walks over to the temple next door and joins the keertan,” said Sushma Date.

A keertan or kirtan, is a “narrating, reciting, telling, or describing of an idea or story” through loud chanting and singing.

It has its roots in the Vedic anukirtana tradition and most often involves legends about deities and other spiritual ideas. A traditional kirtan is normally accompanied by music as well.

Ceremonies like these have been taking place all throughout India for hundreds if not thousands of years.

In the video, the dog can be seen singing along with all of the other men participating in the kirtan. He never misses a ceremony either. Every Thursday night, the dogs shows up at the temple to join in on the fun.

It’s not clear as to whether the dog truly understands the spiritual significance of the event he is participating in, but he definitely loves it.

Even though he doesn’t know the words to the chants, he devotedly howls along, never missing a beat.

Part of the reason he loves joining in could also be the fact that after the kirtan is complete, the men always feed the dog snacks.

“Then he has his share of prasad and trots back home. Every single Thursday! :)” Sushma Date said.

Prasad is a type of vegetarian food that is used as a religious offering in both Hinduism and Sikhism.

The dog certainly appreciates the treat. Prasad is a nice reward for the effort expended participating in the ceremonies. The men clearly don’t mind having the pup around either.

At one point in the video, we see the dog approaching one of the participants. The man gives the dog a nice massage and pat on the head.

The pup happily soaks up all the attention, but the men don’t let the pup distract them too much.

It is important that they continue on with their musical performance. It’s pretty entertaining to watch.

Other people on Twitter liked the video as well.

Whether the dog truly understands what a kirtan is all about or not, he is now officially a regular.

It’s glad to see that the men are so inclusive too. Dog, human, or any other animal — all species are welcome in their temple.
