Dogs make the perfect pets: they are loyal, lively, and full of unconditional love. This dog went above and beyond to protect his family when the toddler wandered out of his mother’s sight. What he did to protect this little boy is extraordinary.
Cooper is a dog who lives in North Dakota with his two owners and their three-year-old son, Carson. He loves this family more than anything. In fact, he owes them his life. When Cooper was just a puppy, his previous owners abandoned him on the side of the road. He would have died had it not been for his rescuers. They took him in and gave him a home. Now there is nothing Cooper would not do for his new family.
One day, Cooper was playing in the farm yard near Carson. The boy was playing with his toy tractor for hours. His mother was inside the house, expecting to see her son any moment. “When 7:30 rolled around I figured he’d start getting hungry sometime,” she explained to HLN.
The minutes ticked by, but Carson had still not come inside. Finally, his mother stepped out, expecting to find him playing in the same spot. Instead, she got the shock of a lifetime.
Carson was nowhere to be found. After searching high and low, both of his parents went into a panic. “It was just- I lost it, I guess you could say,” Carson’s mom recalled. Her heart was beating hard, but she and her husband held on to hope.
Their only relief was that they noticed Cooper was gone, too. They knew he would be with Carson, and they figured that would make it easier to find their son.
Over 200 volunteers showed up to search for the boy, including friends, firefighters, a search plane, and a search dog. They would not give up until they found him. The team combed the entire farm, determined to locate the wanderers.
Finally, someone brought good news. Carson had been found. The second she heard the update, the child’s mom ran up to the ambulance. There was Carson, safe and sound. Cooper had stayed by his side the entire time.
But the dog did more than just keep track of the boy. To protect him from the cold air, the pup laid on top of him and kept him warm. The two were a mile away from home when they were finally found.
Carson would not have survived if Cooper hadn’t been there to protect him. This loyal dog saved his life; now the two had exchanged rescues.
This heartwarming story shows how big a dog’s heart is. Cooper is a shining example of what it means to truly love someone.
