The current divorce rate in the United States is between 40 and 50%, averaging out to over 875,000 divorces a year.

Sadly, divorce can mean more than just a marriage ending. It can often mean a family has to split up.

When children are involved, divorce can get messy fast. Depending on how the parents handle the situation, it can often put their children in the middle of everything and cause them grief.

But one couple put their daughter first and ten years after their divorce, that daughter is sharing her family’s story.

Devin Petit is a 20-year-old college student in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ten years ago, her parents got a divorce.

Even though they split, both parents continued to live in the same town (and still do) to co-raise their daughter together.

“My parents always maintained an amicable relationship and were really conscious of me and how I felt and always put me first,” Devin told BuzzFeed News. “Throughout my childhood they lived very close to each other and I spent near equal amount of time with both of them.”

Devin is close to celebrating her 21st birthday and to mark the special occasion, her mother, Karen, wanted to give her a special gift.

On Twitter, Devin shared a photo of her birthday present and revealed the touching backstory that it held.

my mom gave me this necklace this morning as an early birthday gift. it’s made from the diamonds of her wedding band. she said although her marriage to my dad didn’t work out, they both agreed I was the best thing to come from it, which is why she wanted me to have it.

Karen took her wedding ring back to the jewelry store it had originally had come from to transform it into a gift for her daughter.

Her mother wanted to give the gift to her daughter as a representation of the commitment she and her ex-husband had in co-parenting over the years.

Devin told BuzzFeed News:

“It was really such a thoughtful gesture to think of passing something like that on to me.”

Devin has a strong relationship with both of her parents because they both put her first after the divorce.

She shares little stories about her parents on her Twitter, which is where she first shared the story about her mother’s gift.

Along with that, Devin once tweeted that her dad likes to “thank” her every time after she spends time with him. Anyone who has ever text their dad knows this is just such a dad thing to do! But Devin’s father is so sweet about it.
