The key to a long life, apparently, isn’t water and eating healthy.

Every January people around the globe are locking down on their New Year’s resolutions and many people have the same goal for the year. They want to lose weight and get in shape.

Most people are sticking to strict diets, drinking green smoothies, and hitting the gym multiple times a week to meet this fitness goal.

But apparently, a 104-year-old woman has cracked the code for a long life and it has nothing to do with any of that! In fact, the key to a long life includes soda, if you can believe it.

Theresa Rowley from Grand Rapids, Michigan just celebrated her 104th birthday on January 1st and she credits it to Diet Coke.

At her birthday party, she was interviewed by local news station WZZM about her long life. Theresa told the reporters:

“When I was 100, I thought I’d never be 104. Then I turn 101, and nothing happens… Here I am 104, and still nothing happens.”

According to Theresa, she has been drinking Diet Coke every day since it was released in 1982.

Scientists have linked Diet Coke, along with other sodas, to an increase in obesity and diabetes, along with strokes and dementia. But for Theresa, it has been treating her well!

Theresa said in her interview that she has a weekly Diet Coke run to the grocery store.

“I drink it because I like it. I’m going shopping Wednesday, and I need more Diet Coke. I have a bag full of empty Diet Coke cans that I need to return to buy more Diet Coke.”

Theresa has lived at Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community in Grand Rapids for the past 15 years and that is where she celebrated her 104th birthday.

She was born in 1904 in Illinois, before her family eventually moved to North Dakota, and then eventually settled in Michigan.

Nowadays, Thersa spends her time in her retirement community and drinking a coke a day! While it has treated her well, keep in mind, various studies have proven that diet sodas and aspartame are actually worse for you than sodas loaded with sugar (while both are obviously not good for you health).

Diet sodas, like Diet Coke, have become popular as they are advertised as being the healthy alternative to soda due to their low or zero calorie options, but that isn’t always the case. It has been said that “aspartame may trigger taste receptors and trick your body into thinking it has just processed sugar.”

At least Theresa is still looking and doing well! However, it is important to note that her claims aren’t substantiated by medical research. Just keep that in mind before you start drinking a diet coke a day!
