If you have been keeping up with season 14 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent at all, then you know that this one special choir, in particular, has been killing it.
Hailing from Michigan, the Detroit Youth Choir didn’t simply make it through the auditions — they got the Golden Buzzer. And for those who don’t know, each judge is allowed to use their Golden Buzzer once per season and when they do, it shoots their favorite acts straight to the live semi-final round.
Recently, the live semi-final rounds have taken place, and the Golden Buzzer-winning Detroit Youth Choir pulled out all the stops to give an extra powerful performance that is guaranteed to move you. It most certainly moved the live audience.
Beginning their performance from inside the audience, each child met the camera with the biggest smile. They all began to merrily skip on stage with nothing but pure joy. They were also in red and white, school-inspired uniforms and were backed by marching band-esque music. In the back, red colors and “Detroit Youth Choir” flashed in big letters.
Soon, they all joined in together on stage and began to sing the hit song “High Hopes” by alternative pop band Panic! At The Disco. It’s undoubtedly a strong choice, as it features powerful vocals and lyrics about having high hopes (pretty fitting for the situation this choir is in!).
But the amazement did not end there. The children also surprised judges and the audience with crazy good choreography, swinging their arms from left to right and bouncing up and down in perfect unison.
The chemistry between all of the children is there, as they are barely a beat out of place. And even if they were out of place, their insanely high energy would make up for it.
As they continued to perform, their instructor even stood near the judges facing them. As he watched he also danced — not trying to hide it at all and exuding an immense amount of pride.
Midway through the performance, one child came out from the group for a surprise solo. What made it so cool though, is that she was not just singing — she was rapping! She effortlessly nailed every word of the verse with utter confidence (and even a little sass!) and at the end, the rest of the choir joined in and helped her complete the verse. Again, showcasing true team work.
Towards the end, the choir added in many claps and even switched up the song and made it their own. They chanted back and forth, added extra “ooohs,” and ultimately, put their very own choir flare on the whole show!
At the very end, the entire audience joined in to clap with the group. Julianne Hugh and Gabrielle Union were even standing while clapping, clearly so beyond happy and in awe at the children’s performance.
The children’s choir was left with a standing ovation from the entire room when they finally wrapped up the performance, and needless to say, they totally earned it.
