While many animals are placed up for adoption, not all of them have such a unique story like Emerson. Emerson is a black lab and was brought into a shelter along with his three siblings when he was eight weeks old. His siblings were quickly adopted, but Emerson was battling some health problems.

Emerson was neglected after he was born and when he was brought into NFR Maine, he was in pretty rough shape. The poor puppy was having seizures and at first, the staff and doctors could not figure out what was wrong. Testing results came back negative, but the attentive staff kept fighting. On top of that, Emerson also broke out with Parvo, or canine parvovirus (CPV), which is a highly contagious viral illness that causes dogs to lose weight and have intestinal issues.

The going was hard, but finally, Emerson pulled through and is now a healthy, happy puppy. However, Emerson will have one more thing to battle for the rest of his life: being deaf. It is unknown if the puppy lost his hearing during the seizures or if he was born that way, but this hasn’t stopped Emerson from being the happy-go-lucky puppy that his new owner needed.

Lindsay Powers with NFR Maine put up a Facebook post when Emerson was healthy and ready for his new home. It took a while for anyone to be interested, but some good things are worth waiting for. The post captured the attention of Nick Abbott who was also born deaf. While Nick is deaf, he still speaks remarkably well and tells of the pair’s first meeting.

“He came straight to me…and stopped right at my foot and stayed there,” says Nick, “you can tell he kind of picked me.”

What a sweet way for Nick to describe his first meeting with Emerson. Not that Nick chose Emerson, but Emerson chose him. Nick finalized the adoption papers that day and Emerson became a part of his family.

“I knew right then that we would get along well and understand each other pretty good,” says Nick.

Nick has taught Emerson “sign language” commands.

Nick and Emerson took to each other so quickly and share a bond already so deep that Emerson is beginning to learn a few hand commands, a sign-language of sorts like “sit” and “lie down”. Emerson is a smart puppy and is catching on fast. He warmed up to the other dogs in Nick’s family quickly and the two are happily enjoying their new life together.

“The bond that we have, is awesome,” says Nick and describes Emerson as being a “happy dog”.

It is so great to hear the stories of sweet, faithful pets finding their forever loving homes. Nick and Emerson will have many happy days together.
