This school lets kids use their imaginations in ways other schools consider “dangerous.”
Together with his wife Robin, software engineer Gever Tully founded the Tinkering School. Unlike the traditional parochial school, they let the children use things that most would consider dangerous.
The kids use matches, power tools, and many other potentially dangerous tools to construct amazing projects, and they thrive doing it!
At the heart of the Tinkering School, is building and immersive problem-solving.
During this 6 day program, the kids focus on building projects both with plans and spontaneously depending on what feels right. There is no “right way” at the Tinkering School, the kids don’t come to learn anything specifically, instead, they get to choose what they’ll learn and build.
Their failures are celebrated rather than ridiculed, teaching them that failure is a necessary part of learning and making progress. By embracing failure, the kids become quite the problem solvers!
The kids learn amazing lessons from the unique program, like the fact that nothing ever goes as planned!

“Our goal is to ensure they leave with a better sense of how to make things then when they arrived and the deep internal realization that you can figure thinks out while fooling around. Nothing ever turns out as planned, ever, and the kids soon learn that all projects go array, and become at ease with the idea that every step in a project is a step closer to sweet success.” Tully said during the Ted Talk.

The tools that the kids are entrusted to use, enable them to build projects from their wildest dreams, like this amazing wooden rollercoaster that Tully says “was built by 7-year-olds.”

The Tinkering School is teaching kids what other schools should be like perseverance and teamwork.
The kids work as a team using otherwise useless things like plastic grocery bags, to construct things that will blow your mind! Check out this bridge they built out of nothing but plastic!
