Pablo Picasso once said “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” In one sentence, he summed up perfectly the indescribable way art can turn the mundane into all sorts of magical; how it can alter the worst of moods and bring inspiration when least expected.
And just like painting, dancing and music leave the same lasting effect.
Bonnie Su loves creating music and dance projects. One of her masterpieces is a dance number to a Liv Dawson track called “Tapestry“.
The song was released in 2016, and the artist sums up its meaning by explaining that “it’s about everything in your life being part of your tapestry.” (Source: Clash)
Bonnie Su created quite a captivating choreography that pairs perfectly with the meaningful track.
Along with fellow dancers Angeline Chin, Ashleigh Noto, Christine Walsh, Emily Yang, Emma Launder, Mei Li Kok, Naomi Wo, Sarah Chua, Tira Ilham, Tran Le, Vivian Loo, and Yuri Loong, Bonnie took a location with a scenic view, coupled it with creative ensembles in neutral tones, and blended everything seamlessly with her choreography and the music.
With clear skies as their backdrop and a stunning view that set off the production, the dancers maximized the spacious area as they moved freely about, each step done with impressive synchronicity and grace.
In the description of the video, Bonnie writes,
“When I was younger, I thought that my friendships would last forever. Not surprisingly, growing up made me realise that this was not how life works. People walk in and out of our lives, and I have lost many that I once loved. Regardless of where we are now, those friends were once very important to me, and will always be part of my “tapestry”, the person I am today. It’s been a while. I really loved creating this one. I hope you love it too.”
Similar to the artist’s description, the dance choreographer took the friendship angle and turned it into a beautiful dance piece.
It was a different approach to dance and had viewers praising its uniqueness.
The once beautiful idea was brought to life as Bonnie and the dancers translated the song’s meaning with their delicate movements.
The dancers worked together beautifully, even as they broke off in pairs for certain parts of the routine. And whenever they would come together as a group, the transition would always be flawless.
It was art in motion.
More than just putting together an impressive dance number that the world would grow to love and appreciate, the group also gave their audience all over a glimpse of how well they could fuse each aspect and their ideas together, from the outfits to the colors, to the location and the videography.
The dance was indeed a perfect interpretation of the song’s depiction of friendship.
The group’s efforts to produce such an impressive number clearly shows teamwork and cooperation.
The aesthetically pleasing production earned over 70K views on YouTube and left quite an impression on viewers across the globe.
