Some streets are teeming with swagger, especially in New York City.
The unique culture lends itself to an incredible art scene of all forms.
One normal New York night, an extremely skilled violinist is minding his own business, lost in the shredding of his violin bow to a pre-written, consistent rhythm.
He’s absolutely screeching.
This isn’t exactly classical music. He plays to a consistent, modern beat.
Apparently, the advent of the violin gradually developed over time, drawing from a handful of other string instruments. Influences on the violin’s eventual shape trace back as far as the 9th century. Modern historians generally agree that what we know as the violin likely emerged in 16th century Italy. It’s become a staple world instrument since, spreading to all corners of the globe.
Now, violins have completely transcended their original uses and genres, influencing exciting modern styles.
The violinist continues his shredding.
A group of three approaches, stopping to observe the performance before expressing incredible excitement.
At this point, the violinist likely has no idea that they’re even there.
The group members take a quick look around, collectively communicating to each other what they already know.
It’s time to dance.
They break into some smooth moves right along to the violin.
The center member starts turning it up, breaking into a fast-paced groove.
By this point, it’s still not exactly certain if the violinist’s even aware of what’s happening. His back’s still facing the dancers.
The members of the group begin taking turns dancing up a storm.
The violinist finally turns around, maintaining complete composure. I wonder where he learned to play?
He’s absolutely incredible! As are the accompanying dancers.
The entire performance is an interesting blend of musical genres.
The group members take turns trading off swift steps.
As the funk group Chic once said, “My feet keep dancin’, dancin’.”
By this point, every single one of the performers is lost in the music, completely taken away.
The bright New York City lights set a perfect stage.
The dancer in the white shirt steps into the center, rattling off a series of slick moves.
He continues his flurry next to the violinist.
The NYPD van in the background adds some more New York flavor.
I wonder if the cops are enjoying the performance as much as I am.
The performer with the dark hat steps into the center of the triangle, quickly pumping his arms and feet to the screeching violin.
His fleet feet are incredibly flashy.
One of the performers pulls his shirt over his head, exposing his torso.
Our esteemed violinist lets out a sly smile.
Everyone looks like they’re enjoying themselves.
At points, their dancing’s so fast their legs are practically a blur.
The dancers break into a robust set of group choreography.
The entirety of the violin-dance performance’s fantastic. This street corner at this moment features some incredible talent – a real treat for onlookers.
The center dancer takes a giant, theatrical step forward.
The trusty violinist continues to improvise on the side. By this point, the dancers are in sync with some cool group choreography.
The dancers maintain their rhythm as the performance comes to an end. This spontaneous dance came almost out of nowhere, yet was so good it’s hard to believe it wasn’t rehearsed.
Most importantly, the performance showcases a collection of skilled artists having tons of fun with their respective crafts. I love to see it.
