Viral dances are nothing new. Just this century alone, people have been breaking it down to the Cupid Shuffle, the Dougie, and the Harlem Shake. But the newest one has got the sweetest twist yet.
The Git Up is like many other line dances.
The lyrics give the dancers commands for each new dance step. That makes it pretty easy to learn! But there’s one line that’s given rise to the newest Git Up Challenge.
“Gon’ and do the two-step then cowboy boogie,” goes the song. “Grab your sweetheart and spin out with ’em.”
For men all around the internet, that “sweetheart” is their daughter.
Today, there’s a multitude of daddy-daughter dancing duos on the internet. They include all ages and dance proficiencies, some better than others. But they’ll all tug on your heartstrings.
Just take this smooth-stepping pair. Corey Brower and his daughter used their living room to perform the Git Up Challenge. They’ve definitely got the moves, each putting their own unique spin on the dance. But the best part is seeing just how much fun they’re having together.
Brower’s daughter forgets the moves a couple of times, but it’s no biggie — she just giggles at her dad and the two of them keep dancing. It’s clear how much they adore one another.
Singer Blanco Brown is thrilled at the reception to the song.
And he has a couple of things to say about what makes the song, a mix of country and hip-hop, so infectious.
“Around 2008, I was doing traditional country records,” said Brown. “So, I got to the point where I was like, ‘I want to put some more pizazz on it.’ I started adding 808s, and beatboxing, and kicks, and snares. It made everybody listen.”
He added trap beats to the traditional country feel.
After he experimented in a whole new genre, Brown was ready to go. The result of the newest type of music was the Git Up.
It’s been performed over and over again by people all over the internet. A search for the “Git Up Challenge” will bring up videos of police officers, nurses, morning show hosts, professional dancers, and even Brown himself performing the viral line dance. And of course, there are countless videos of dads performing it with their daughters.
There are dads with toddlers, older daughters, dads and daughters in matching outfits, and just regular dads jamming in their living room with their “sweetheart.”
Brown says he’s happy the song is having its moment in the spotlight and especially that he was able to make it become a cultural icon.
“It’s purpose over money,” he said, then jokingly added: “But, you know…I still like getting a little money here and there.”
There are many ways that people make the Git Up Challenge their own.
This dance will live on in infamy because it’s more than just a line dance — it gives people a chance to dance with those they love the most.
