Whether they don’t understand the latest fashion trends or think their kids are showing too much skin, it’s almost a time-honored tradition for parents and teens to go head-to-head about wardrobe choices.
A dad in Orlando recently took umbrage at the length of his 14-year-old daughter’s shorts. So, he decided to model a pair of his own.
Jason Hilley thought his daughter Kendall was wearing shorts that were too short.
He asked her to buy herself a new pair.
“I said, ‘Kendall, take my debit card and buy yourself shorts that fit,” said Hilley. “She got on her computer and did just that.”
Hilley thought the matter had been laid to rest.
So, he was confused when he saw her leaving the house in the same short shorts. To his shock, Kendall told him that she was wearing her new shorts — but the length hadn’t improved.
Hilley took a pair of scissors to his jeans and decided to make himself a pair of matching shorts. His wife Allison got a video of him striding into Kendall’s room to show off his new Daisy Dukes.
And Hilley wasn’t shy about strutting his stuff.
In the video, he props up a leg to really give everyone a good look. Then he sticks his backside out, examining it in the mirror. And of course, he gives his thigh a slap.
“I’m picking her up from school with these on,” says Hilley as he strikes a pose. “Look at my cheeks hangin’ out.”
He tells Kendall to get her own shorts so they can compare them side by side.
Of course, Hilley immediately demands to know whose shorts are shorter.
His antics have his kids in stitches. Kendall and her 8-year-old brother Walker are both laughing. Meanwhile, their mom behind the camera can’t stop laughing too.
Hilley says that jokes are an integral part of his parenting style.
“We joke around a lot, but Kendall knows when my jokes are serious,” he said. “Kids will be kids and try to push the limits. That’s when I step in and try to correct the behavior with a little bit of humor. You don’t have to yell and scream and punish to get a point across.”
It was a creative way to address the issue, and after they uploaded their video, it went viral, being shared more than 800,000 times and amassing 47 million views. But if you think that Kendall is scarred for life, you should know that she and Walker are used to their dad’s embarrassing behavior and take it all in stride.
“Kendall is a cheerleader and asks me to do routines with her in out front yard,” said Hilley. “It’s quite a sight.”
