How often have you looked at your child’s doodles and thought “what if real life looked like this?” Let’s be honest, they’re usually pretty crazy scribbles, squiggles and squaggles. But this London father saw something else in his kids, Dom and Al’s, home drawings! He thought “what if I could make this into real life?” Tom Curtis used his incredible photoshop skills to turn his children’s drawings into real life “what-ifs” and the internet exploded over it! Let’s check out some of his best works!
1) Happy doodle, sad crab
Is it a spider? Is it a crab? who knows! All I know is that the dad made the hilarious decision of turning into a crab with a not so happy face. Is it because it’s a misfit among it’s regular crustacean peers? Only Tom could tell you for sure.

2) Gullagull
I don’t need to think too hard about why this seagull has three limbs on one side and only one on the other! That’s simply Dom or Al’s creative license! And honestly, that’s probably exactly how they look to a young mind from afar!

3) TEEF
This meerkat has some TEEF. It probably needed to floss more honestly, there seems to be some gaps between those big ol’ chompers! I especially love how realistic those eyes still look, in a mildly terrifying way. Don’t even get me started on the button nose!
4) Shbats
I would probably like bats a whole lot more if they looked like this! It’s so cute and fluffy, and no big fangs to deter me from petting! Its aerodynamics kind of took a big hit here and that thin stretch of wing makes me think there’s no way it could fly straight, but somehow this bat is finding a way!

5) Big swan
I love this one so much! It’s so hilariously cute, like some kind of swan penguin combo! So rolly-polly-olly. It looks like it would just bob around the pond! Its expression makes me think it would have very little control over where its going.

6) Abominable goat man
I can’t imagine these kids like goats very much, or maybe some other farm animal, if this is what they remember! Lucky for us, we get hilarious and cute renditions of some adorable farm monsters! Tom mentions in the instagram post that his kids always draw things that they’ve actually seen, so who knows what really prompted this drawing! Spooky.

7) The ugly duckling
One of these things is not like the other! I love that in so many of these drawings the subject is smiling! Even if the mouth isn’t really… on their mouth! Children’s minds are so wholesome that way!

8) Racket
The most true to real life yet! You can’t begrudge some wide wiring and a not so circular racket! I really love that Tom went all out with the details of the photo, even making sure the tennis ball was true to the drawing!

9) Narwhat?
This super rad “unicorn of the sea” was drawn by Lola, a young fan of Things I Have Drawn! It’s a pretty hilarious recreation that Tom has done which only becomes more hilarious with Tom’s caption, admitting that he might have gone overboard by giving the narwhal fur!

10) Smoothest ride
This is a car of the future, mark my words! Dom and Al are visionaries and this is what everyone will be driving in the future. We just need to figure out how those wheels work and where we’ll put our legs…

11) Mean beein’
A quick doodle on the finger becomes a hilarious bee face from the most pollen drunk little guy! He’s absolutely covered in the stuff! That face tells me he needs more pollen!

12) Hookbird!
Evolution might have actually pumped out something like this and we would have never known the difference! It looks so oddly believable somehow! My personal favourite and extremely well made, well done Tom, and Signe!

13) Mixed bag
Here’s a pretty great showcase of Tom’s works! You see exactly what the doodle was to inspire a good mix of different critters! Some you’ve seen or will see, others are totally new! You ought to recognise the swan from just a couple slides ago! Nemo might have been a very different movie if he had looked something like this!

14) Gnome Shocksky
This guy is deeply shocked or disturbed by something! Who knows what this gnome is looking up at! It’s an absolutely hilarious way to portray such a face though, way better than photoshopping it onto some poor soul!

15) Penguinigin
This is honestly amazing work! It’s still so textured and oddly real feeling! This odd little fella just wants to give a wave and he’s very happy to do so! I don’t blame the other penguin for swimming away from him though, I don’t know what I would do coming across something like this in my habitat…

16) Tiny monkey, giant fist
This little monkey is having a blast swinging through the trees… I think! That hand is seriously something else and it’s one of the few times I really wish monkey hands didn’t resemble human hands quite so much. He doesn’t even need another hand with one that size, that thing will get the job done!

17) Bird on a line
This guy ought to look familiar! Now he’s being portrayed as just another bird on the line, waving down at all the people below! He retains his penguin aesthetic because… Well why not? This is uncharted territory! Animals can do whatever they want in art!

18) Hornbeak
This macaw either has a cranked neck or very interesting turned face but he’s happy about it either way! I have to wonder if he would use that beak the same way a rhino would use its horn or if it’s just used for eating, drinking and squawking like normal! I especially love the detail Tom put in with the velocity of the wings being shown! This bird isn’t stagnant in the air, you can tell it’s moving and fast!

19) Rainbowcorn
A drawing submitted by young Jarl who has been to a magic forest of a zoo! It yielded fantastic results from Tom who went all out from creature to background! He even gave it a little smile, in true Things I Have Drawn format! These kids must love seeing their drawings come to life. I can only imagine Tom is inspiring a whole generation of digital artists to be!

20) Smug slug
I have questions for Tom about this slug! He has put eyes at the end of the antennas which makes me wonder… What are those two dots on the body!? Are they nostrils? Does it just have four eyes? The best part of these questions is that they’re all up to your imagination!

21) Blast off!
This spaceship is so rad! Imagine having windows like that! What a view you would get. I appreciate the fine touch detail of having reflections of the sky in the windows too! Tom might just be raising future astronauts!

22) Fresh meat
Tigers are definitely intimidating at the best of times but even more so when they give you a look like that! If you see a tiger give you this face in the wild, you should turn around and run, because it wants to eat you. Don’t let the fact that it’s missing two legs fool you, it will catch you and those teeth look like they would HURT.

23) Ouch!
Poor crocodile… This guy’s head ripped off like a piece of paper! Honestly, I really love the creativity in this one. Tom saw something a little extra in an opportunity where most parent’s would have tossed the drawing in the recycling! That’s really special, not to mention the mark of a good dad! As if there was ever any question!

24) Pandabug
This panda has six arms! That probably makes climbing trees or grabbing bamboo stocks that much easier, right? This panda is still so fuzzy, I would definitely cuddle up to it and just accept the six arm embrace.

25) Lift off smell
Something brand new from the boys! A robotic flying dinosaur! This guy alone is probably exactly what caused the dinoaurs to become extinct! He’s replaced his soft mortal coil with indestructible titanium and a steady intake of beans keeps him flying for as long as he needs! But that face doesn’t exactly scream terminator to me, he’s probably innocent!

26) The odder otter
Look at the faces on this pair! Vampire otters were never something I had considered before but I’m significantly happier with them in existence. They look so spooked! Like they just heard a shutter close as the photographer snapped his shot or something. We’ve all seen skittish animals make this exact face!

27) Outsider
An odd cockerel on the streets of London? What are you doing there, big guy? It seems like despite his friendly face, all the pigeons are just trying not to make eye contact and pretend like he isn’t there! Someone’s gotta come pick up their weird bird and bring it back to the lab… I mean farm.

28) XOF
In case we wouldn’t be sure, Pasha was sure to label his drawing as FOX so that we would know exactly what it is! But we knew, Pasha, we knew. A seriously impressive job from Tom on this one, he absolutely nailed the photoshop job! Doesn’t this weirdly look like something you really would encounter in the wild? The fur is so well done!

29) Gato
Right back to the start! It makes me happy to know that Tom has been holding on to his children’s art and that he’s actively going through it to find the ones that will make for the best creations! I love that the side smiles have been a staple from the very beginning!

30) Egg season
I wouldn’t really mind this Easter bunny coming around and delivering chocolate eggs aroung the neighborhood! He’s weirdly cute and friendly looking, even if those pink eyes are a little spooky! With fluff like that I would definitely still want to pick him up, give him a cuddle and tell him what a great job he’s doing!

31) Berzerker
I think it’s awesome and really healthy that Dom is drawing animals that he finds big and scary! It helps make them a little more palatable and he’ll be more comfortable with them in the long run! We should all be drawing our fears to help overcome them! I might be biased since I love bears, but I really love this rendition!
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Things I have drawn (@thingsihavedrawn) on
32) Grow up
I can’t wait to see this taddypole grow up to become a frog with a similar expression! We’ll have to wait for Dom or Al to draw a follow up! Frogs might not have teeth but neither do tadpoles so I hope he keeps them in there! They’re oddly endearing!
33) Life lessons
What do you do when your child starts to become affected by the violence seen in the world? What if they start drawing guns and tanks and war machines? Well, you paint them pink and put symbols of peace on them of course! Turn those lazers into bubbles! It might upset them but you can give them a good lesson about why these things aren’t light subject matter and should be taken seriously!

34) Reno
A forward slanted, side faced rhino! What else would you expect from these tiny geniuses? You can tell that they really understand some aspects of illustration already! And they have a great memory and eye for detail! Al even included the second horn some rhinos have! Is that not seriously amazing detail?
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Things I have drawn (@thingsihavedrawn) on
35) Flagship
Cheeky little shark fin thrown in there, dad! I don’t think this ship would pass social distancing regulations today but honestly I would want to hop on if I could fly solo! How often would you get a chance to ride on a boat like this!? I love the details the kids remembered of the smoke stacks and flags! Seriously impressive work from everyone!

36) Dognip?
This dog got into SOMETHING to have a face like that! Honestly, it might have been as simple as someone saying “walk” around him though. It’s the trigger word in every dog’s brain to flip a switch and turn them into GO MODE. It’s a seriously cool detail and a little extra effort thrown in there from Tom to give these critters such realistic eyes that match their real life counterparts! It works especially well in this case!

See what I mean? How fun were those images? I’m excited to see way more from Tom and the kids. I’ve been a long time follower on their instagram and they always find a way to keep it fresh! The most exciting thing is that these kids are exercising their drawing muscles in their brains every day and that leads me to suspect we can expect some beautiful art to come from them! I can’t wait to see how Tom works with that!
