Knock, Knock
For many college students, leaving the nest can be one of the hardest decisions they have to make in their life. It’s the time in one’s development to spread their wings and carve their own path without the comfort of having their parents be physically around them. The separation can cause anxiety and even discomfort in being distant from loved ones who have always been there through thick and thin. Fortunately for one college student, her father decided to have some fun with the family’s Ring doorbell camera while she was away from home at college. What ensued is an incredibly heartwarming display that proves no matter the distance, love will somehow find its way.
Emily Brand, a recently moved out college student that is an avid user of the Ring doorbell, says she remains in contact with her family via the Ring doorbell. This nifty device comes equipped with a high definition camera, motion sensor, microphone, and full-functioning speaker. Those that use the interactive product can utilize an app to easily see the camera’s field of view while it is operating.
Emily confesses,
“I told my dad I watch the ring videos at home when I’m away at college and he started leaving me messages.”
That’s when Emily’s father decided to take matters into his own hands. He recorded himself greeting Emily on May 20th and very rapidly gained popularity through his daughters TikTok; accumulating more than 750,000 likes and three million views since it posted. In the video, we see Emily’s father send her various greetings on different days.
We hear things like,“Hey, Em!” to “Hey Em, sorry I couldn’t read your text yet, I was driving,” and even,“Good Luck on your final, last!”.
Adorable Greetings
A plethora of TikTok users have raved about this undeniably heartwarming segment. One viewer said,
“I’m not even joking for a good comment I literally sat in the bathroom crying. I never had in my life that’s been like this so it’s wholesome,” while another stated, “You have to submit this to Ring…this is their next big commercial.”
Ring, which is owned by Amazon, is known for uploading viral videos of Ring to market and commercialized the product. A report from CNET’S Albert Ng showed that various police departments around the nation were giving free or discounted Ring doorbells to certain consumers with the caveat that they would have to surrender any footage at the request of law enforcement. According to Ring, they are not responsible for the exchange of their product for information nor do they support these kinds of programs.
Even more concerning is the fact that a study made by Electronic Frontier Foundation reported that the Android mobile phone version of the app contains a multitude of third-party trackers that retains user’s IP address and name and distributes them to five tracking services. Ring stated that it had terminated four employees who had manipulated information that, “exceeded what was necessary for their job functions.” Emily Brand, who posted the video on TikTok, stated she has not been in contact with Ring for plans to use the video for commercial purposes.
Regardless of the legal implications, the video has undoubtedly brought father and daughter closer with each interaction. It’s a beautiful reminder of how lucky we are to have tools that smash the barriers of physical distance and help relationships flourish one recording at a time.
