Kegan’s Condition
There is a condition known as Giggle Seizures that is rare but potentially very serious. It is a rare brain disease. It is called Gelastic seizures, and when an individual is stricken with it, it causes uncontrollable giggles or laughter that is manic.
Kegan’s condition became evident when he was just a toddler. At first, his parents enjoyed his bouts of giggling but noticed that it was happening at inappropriate time.
Kegan, who is nine now was eventually diagnosed with Gelastic seizures caused by a rare form of epilepsy. Other children have been diagnosed with this condition. Diagnostic tests show a non cancerous lesion deep within the brain.
The Potential Consequences
If left untreated, the condition over a long term can cause brain damage. At one time aggressive brain surgery was the only hope of curing the condition.
A Breakthrough
A new treatment has been discovered that is far less invasive is done with laser surgery, which Kegan underwent and is now a normal child free of the lesion that brought such misery to his life.
Nothing should ever be taken for granted, and every smile, giggle or laughter that comes from a healthy child should be cherished.
