We grow up knowing that someone out there is the one – the one who will make us happy, give us endless love and support, and make us question how we could have ever been with anyone else. Some people know instantly when they have met their soulmate, and other love stories take time to unfold. This woman knew she met the one in college, but a complicated plot line left her story open-ended. You’ll never guess how he professed his love for her.

Callie Grace studied art in college, and she is currently working toward a dual M.A. in Marriage & Family Therapy and Art Therapy. She met her boyfriend, Gavin, in a theater class her freshman year of college. “From the moment we were introduced, he looked at me like he couldn’t look away – and I was just as taken with him,” Callie shared in a post on Love What Matters. “It took seven years of crazy chemistry, before either one of us were brave enough to make the first move.”

Years later, the two were planning an evening celebration for their anniversary. “We were both working late,” Callie explained. “Gavin suggested I join him for his GMCLA choir rehearsal, so that we would be able to at least spend some time together.” She happily agreed, but this girl had no idea what was waiting for her when she got to the rehearsal.

Gavin announced to everyone that it was their anniversary. “The piano accompanist began playing one of ‘our’ songs,” Callie recalled. “Gavin asked me to join him on the platform . . . It turns out that [he] had transcribed the music by hand, and the chorus had been practicing for weeks! Despite this, I truly thought he was singing to me because it was our anniversary.”

Then came the big surprise: “He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him . . . Both of our families were standing there – even mine who had flown in from Oregon!”

Callie and Gavin had found their happy ending. They were thrilled to be together, especially since it had not always been that way. After college, the two had parted ways. Callie had struggled with eating disorders for years, and the problem became much worse after college.

She reconnected with Gavin when they realized they both lived in Los Angeles. Despite Callie’s happiness, she still faced complications. “The severity of my eating disorder made our day-to-day circumstances very difficult. I was so sick that I was practically in a revolving door to the ER.” At one point the couple had to travel to Denver ACUTE, a specialized portion of the hospital, for Callie to be fed and treated. She transferred to a residential facility near home – her 7th treatment center.

Gavin supported Callie the whole time. He would read to her and attend support groups with her. He even did his best to be by her side at every medical appointment. These are two people who truly love each other.

The engagement was a dream come true for Callie. “It was the sweetest, most magical moment of my life that the people that love us the most were able to witness such a special moment. . . Cheers to this crazy, irrational, extraordinary, serendipitous life!”
