Customer goes above and beyond to mail $20 tip and internet swoons over letter inside
Going through his receipts, he found that instead of the customer copy, he had taken the signed merchant's copy with the tip amount on it.

It never huts to leave someone a tip. Some folks say it’s bad practice, and that customers shouldn’t be the ones paying the server’s wages.

In a perfect world, one where service workers make a decent wage, that would be true. But in many establishments, most service workers have to stretch their paychecks as much as possible.

And that’s precisely why this generation is a big more generous when tipping. Hyperinflation has made all of us more sympathetic, especially to service workers.

Here, a customer didn’t just leave a tip. They went the extra mile and wrote a sweet letter too – one that got the internet’s attention.

This took place at Side Street Pour House and Grill, in Lenoir NC, North Carolina.

Side Street Pour House really prides itself on the incentive and hardworking attitude of their staff.

They make sure the customers are always satisfied with the service, and truly earn their tips.

Still, it’s nice to get some help every now and then to pay the bills. So the establishment welcomes tipping of its staff, knowing the hard work they do.

A customer dined here with his wife recently, and got to experience firsthand just how good the service was.

Except when this customer, Tim, left a tip, they made a mistake. So they remedied that mistake.

They sent a note to the restaurant, detailing the mixup that had happened.

And the letter they penned to the restaurant got a ton of attention, in no small part thanks to how eloquent the customer was.

The mistake happened like this: the customer paid by card, and wanted them to charge the tip to the card.

Sounds simple enough. Except the receipt is where the mistake lay.

The customer mistakenly took the merchant copy – where you’d normally write down the tip amount and leave with the restaurant.

And in doing so, the restaurant was left with the customer copy, which doesn’t include a field at the bottom for the customer to write the tip amount.

This just wouldn’t do. The staff member who served this customer, named Hope, had done an excellent job. The concerned customer felt like Hope had earned that tip, and a mistake like this had to be remedied as soon as possible.

And so they attached a $20 bill to a letter, apologizing for the mistake.

“I can only trust that Hope will forgive my blunder. Please find enclosed her tip in cash. That was no way for either of us to end 2023. Here’s to a fresh start.”

People commented on the extreme formality in this letter, finding humor in the unexpectedly eloquent apology.

In a world where slang dominates every conversation we have, this kind of formality is nice to see once in a while.

And they closed it off with even more punctuality.

“With humble apologies to you and to Hope, I remain sincerely yours. – Ted”

What would you do if someone tipped you with such a formally-written letter?
