There seems to be a national preoccupation with unsolved mysteries. If people aren’t talking about it on social media, they’re watching a documentary about it on Netflix.
Mysteries, true crime – you name it, we love a weird story. That’s why we thought it might be fun to look through some other unsolved mysteries and puzzles that have shown up on Reddit to amuse amateur sleuths.
Some are funny while others are a bit eerie – which ones do you prefer?
Check out some of the most popular (and mysterious) ones we could find!
1. A hidden bug
A “bug” is a hidden microphone or camera that is used to spy on someone without their knowledge.
One Redditor (shadybusiness15) found a bug in an extension cable that blew one night and decided to investigate. This is what he found when it opened it up.
When he called his service provider, he found out its connection was no longer active. And after contacting the manufacturer, he was told that he would have to get a warrant if he was going to find out what had been recorded on it! Super creepy.

2. Grateful dead (doe)
In a wrecked car crash, a body was found with a shirt that said: “Grateful Doe,” back in 1995. Most people forgot about the unidentified body, but one Redditor started researching the whole story.
Soon, she located a former roommate who helped her put together the final pieces, discovering that the man was Jason Callahan.
Now, there’s a whole Reddit forum called r/GratefulDoe devoted to putting a name to unidentified bodies.

3. Cicada 3301
In 2012, an online puzzle was released with this message:
Hello. We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test. There is a message hidden in the image. Find it, and it will lead you on the road to finding us. We look forward to meeting the few who will make it all the way through. Good luck.
A Swedish researcher took on the challenge and was able to solve it with special software – and the Mayan language. But we still don’t know who was trying to use the puzzle as a recruiting tool.

4. The Crazy Box
In 2013, a Redditor started documenting his exploration through a strange box he found in the trash.
It had information on governments, beautiful hand-drawn posters, and technical renderings that appeared to show some type of government coverup.
Turns out, the owner was just schizophrenic and expecting an alien invasion that he thought was predicted in the Bible.

5. 432 Mystery
The mystery started when 4chan users started getting emails saying:
“You have been selected, where have you gone? We are watching.”
There was also a link to a darkweb site buried deep in the bowels of the Internet with pictures that claimed to reveal mysteries about the world. The site isn’t active any longer, but the mysteries and puzzles remain unsolved and nobody knows what really happened or who was responsible for it.
6. A Homeless Bifid Cipher
In 2013, a homeless man walked up and gave a stranger $50 and a note with letters all over it. Turns out, it was a Bifid Cipher and people went to great lengths (hiring professors, looking online, etc.) hoping to solve it.
They attempted to transcribe into IP addresses and names, but it was never fully solved. In fact, the original poster took his whole account down after getting too much attention as well as some threats about the mystery.

7. r/F04cb41f154db2f05a4a
The subreddit r/F04cb41f154db2f05a4a seems random, but it has some strange corresponding photos on Imgur that keep popping up. Also, there are comments that say weird things like:
Wait, hold on. I think I may have found out how to decipher this. What you guys are failing to realize is that all of thinks links are individual instances of lost ones those who are comming [sic]. There is no light here. The third gate is open. Mark of the flame. Silent mouths agape. Blood on the stones. Run.
The messages can be decoded but nobody knows what their real purpose is.

8. The sound in Forest Grove
An ABC News anchor from Oregon posted about a squeaking sound that was haunting people in the town. Most people thought the answer was going to be boring and didn’t care all that much.
Oddly enough, it still exists and nobody knows what is causing it.

9. Nequam Sonitus
The mystery started when someone got a random CD in the mail with weird noises and album art with websites all over it. The CD had GPS coordinates that led to an old factory. Once people started posting about it, a mysterious Redditor started replying and talking to people about it.
Turns out it was clever marketing for an experimental musician promoting his album.

10. r/A858DE45F56D9BC9
Here’s another subreddit mystery! This one involved strange code being posted to r/A858DE45F56D9BC9 that didn’t make sense.
When someone finally decoded some of it, it depicted an ASCII version of Stonehenge. There is still no resolution to the purpose or meaning since it has all been deleted, but people are still trying to figure it out.

11. Just a weird photo
In 2015 someone posted a really weird photo with this caption:
“This image was generated by a computer on its own.”
The thread was subsequently filled with people talking about what role computers have to play in art, among other things. It’s pretty interesting and it wasn’t posted by a human, giving it an extra creepy vibe.

12. Unfavorable semicircle
In 2015, a YouTuber started posting TONS of videos. After 10,000 of them, people took notice of a few named “Lock” and “Delock.” Each had intense audio that was overly processed and contained pixelated images.
The channel was taken down by YouTube, but you can still find them here. People thought they were government agencies testing frequencies out, but nobody really knows for sure.

13. The Hotel Zaza
In 2013, a Redditor posted a photo from his hotel room at the Zaza in Houston. There were some weird things in the room and as you can guess, the internet started speculating.
Some thought it had something to do with the Skull and Bones Secret Society, but it was apparently just a themed room that people speculated about because they didn’t know the details.

14. AETBX
In 2015, a video was released on YouTube with all the trappings of something weird. It had strange costumes and hidden messages throughout the entire thing. People thought it was some type of message to “the people,” but apparently it was just an art project!

15. The Old Tape
In 2013 a tape was released on 4chan’s /x/ board and it sounded like someone flipping through different AM stations. It was super weird and the audio contained clips that people thought were hidden messages.
But rumor has it that it was probably just another art project. Some thought it was malware.

16. Mount Chiliad
To set the stage, this is TOTALLY fictional! In the game Grand Theft Auto V, there is a mountain with weird murals and blinking lights visible. Lots of gamers and Redditors have teamed up to solve it, but nobody has been able to crack the code so far.

17. The Mystery of the Button
In April of 2015, a mystery button experiment popped up on Reddit. It really divided people – and there were some CRAZY theories about what it totally meant.
Some people thought it was a moral dilemma-type thing while others thought it was… just a button.
18. Sad Satan
Sad Satan was a viral mystery that started as a horror game on the dark web discovered by a YouTuber called “Obscure Horror Corner.”
In it, players wander through a labyrinth made out of dark hallways. It eventually was taken down because of the nature of the content. It’s genuinely creepy to watch.

19. Webdriver Torso
Webdriver Torso was a YouTube channel that uploaded strange videos with a lot of beeping. It was apparently made by YouTube to do internal testing. But it sure did inspire some good conspiracy theories.

20. The Song
In 2014, a Redditor heard a song in a commercial and became totally obsessed with finding out the name and artist, in fact, she even e-mailed the carmaker’s marketing department to no avail.
It wasn’t until a year later when another random Redditor PM’d here out of the blue with the title that her mystery was solved.
“I have no idea who that Redditor is. I have no idea how they found me, and I have no idea how they knew about that song. I’m fairly sure I never mentioned it on Reddit. I send them a slightly crazed reply; a mix of utter gratitude and utter confusion,” she said, making it all the more strange.

Things on the internet can sometimes be a bit strange… but if one thing’s for sure, it’s not boring!
If you haven’t already, make sure you check out the “unsolved” ones we mentioned and see if you can add anything interesting with your sleuthing skills!
