The Marsh Family in Faversham, England, are getting bored and stir-crazy like the rest of us. They’re also talented musicians who happen to have a great sense of humor!
They’ve recently gone viral for making musical adaptation videos while in self-isolation.
The clever group has changed the classic lyrics from Les Misérables, to something we can all relate to right now. Coronavirus themed lyrics, of course! What else?
Ben Marsh, his wife Danielle, and their four children Alfie, Thomas, Ella, and Tess, perform from the comfort of their living room.
Before the music even starts, you can see the whole family is buzzing with the pre-performance jitters. They must have been practicing for ages! There’s some giggling and bickering until Dad starts the music.
The lyrics have been, let’s say, modernized.
The words most relevant to the struggles of people in early 1800s France, are a little different to the struggles we face today.
Old lyrics that may have no emotional significance to you now, like:
“This never-ending road to Calvary
These men who seem to know my crime
Will surely come a second time”
become something beautiful and heart wrenching, like:
“Shopping for online delivery
I tried again, only to find
There’s nothing ’til September time”
The reimagined lyrics cover all the daily challenges we’re all surviving in our current world: shared bathrooms, online classes, grandparents being unfamiliar with Skype, and living in limbo while we wait for a vaccine.
You can see the kids have been involved with coming up replacement lyrics, because they all seem very specific!
One of the most hilarious parts is when the eldest kid pops up with a “red flag” (a cardigan on a stick, same thing) singing about his online schooling sorrows.
They’re really expressing what we’re all feeling about being in the house with our families so long.
Getting on each other’s nerves, running out of ideas for things to do with the kids – everything involved with being cooped up too long!
Let’s be honest, this Dad is all of us right now.
“We’ll be ready for these schoolboys
They will wet themselves with blood”
Becomes
“We’re not ready for this schoolboys
‘Cause they just don’t give a f—“
When they sing their line about ordering a pizza I feel jealous. Pizza shops are still open where they live?! Sign me up. I forget what take out pizza tastes like. So many moons ago…
And the dad sounds suspiciously like Russel Crowe! It’s so cool that these parents have passed down their talent to their kids, and are channelling their energy into this fun project.
The end note is honestly in perfect pitch and harmony. This family is not messing around!
These young kids are crazy talented and surely have a bright future in music ahead of them. It also seems like their household is a pretty open and encouraging place to foster their music careers. This little boost of internet fame won’t hurt either.
They’ve become internet celebrities overnight, now appearing on local news channels and being interviewed about their viral video.
And spreading joy through music wasn’t enough – the family decided to donate all the revenue from their videos and interviews to the COVID Solidarity Response Fund.
This musical family of six has really found an amazing way to channel their boredom into something special during these trying times!
What an inspirational way to spend this unplanned down time, and keeping spirits up!
