Hospitals aren’t built for fun. Everything from the strong scent of bleach and medicine to the flickering fluorescent lights gives an overwhelming feeling of…anything but fun. Most people only have to spend time in a hospital for a few hours or days.
Imagine what it’s like for nurses who have to deal with blood, contagious illnesses, and angry patients throughout most of their year. It’s no surprise then that hospitals have a high churn rate of nurses every year. So what do you make of an emergency room nurse brave enough to stand in front of a knife to save your life? That’s what this one brave nurse did.
Yusuf Aka Wreaks Havoc At The Leicester Royal Infirmary
To many sitting in the reception area of the Leicester Royal Infirmary, that day wasn’t any different than any other day of the week. As is often the case, everyone just wanted to get treated and go home. A 22-year-old by the name of Yusuf Aka had other plans.
Footage released by the Leicestershire Police shows three passers-by leaving the hospital when Yusuf appears out of nowhere wielding a knife. Two people in that small group jump over rails and run for their lives. The third, sadly, couldn’t get away fast enough and is stabbed in the back. Though wounded, the man in the video manages to flee before Yusuf takes another potentially lethal swing at him. He misses.
A few seconds later, we see Yusuf moving hurriedly up a walkway leading to the hospital’s entrance when two ladies, one in a wheelchair, leave the hospital unaware of what had just happened. Lucky for them, Yusuf just ignores them and walks into the hospital.
At exactly 2:26 a.m., we see Yusuf grab a computer monitor and toss it across the reception waiting area. The monitor hits someone and causes the room to panic. I don’t know about you, but when something like that happens my first instinct would be to run.
Lucky for everyone in the room, the nurses run towards the chaos and start to guide everyone away from Yusuf. While this is happening, Yusuf turns his attention to the computers at the reception desk and tries to destroy them all.
The nurses almost successfully get everyone out when Yusuf grabs another monitor and throws it at two patients (one in a wheelchair). Caroline Clayton-Barker, the nurse, guiding patients away from the waiting area, unbelievably, is seen sprinting towards Yusuf in protest.
Yusuf then turns towards her giving the remaining two patients an opportunity to run away. Caroline eventually runs to safety leaving Yusuf in the empty waiting room. A guard and nurse later subdued Yusuf before the police came in and took him away.
What happened after?
During his trial, Yusuf admitted to having been under the influence of heavy drugs. He pleaded guilty to the charges of wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon and was sentenced to five years in prison. In an interview with the BBC, Caroline admits that she wasn’t thinking about herself when she tried to confront Yusuf, she was just doing her job. Unfortunately, while this nurse saved patients, she has since quit being a nurse.
We should all take the time to appreciate the unsung heroes like Caroline who make our lives much safer and easier even without hesitation.
