What would you do if you happened to be in a convenience store when an armed criminal came in to rob the place? For most of us, the answer is simple — call the police, obey the robber’s orders, give them our money, hide in a corner. Really, any of those are acceptable answers.
The one thing we all probably wouldn’t do is to try to fight back and disarm the guy, but that is why we are all forever doomed to just be ordinary people and not heroes like the amazing cowboy in this viral YouTube video.
It all took place in a convenience store in Mexico earlier this year, and luckily for us, the whole incident was captured on camera.
The video starts with the gun-wielding robber entering the store, and he is pretty brazen about the fact that he is committing a crime. The armed man isn’t even wearing a mask!
The hero of our story, an older gentleman with a mustache, can be seen in the bottom left-hand corner of the footage wearing a giant cowboy hat.
As the robber approaches the counter, waving his gun around wildly, the Mexican cowboy just casually observes the situation.
The robber quickly turns his attention towards him instead. The cowboy calmly takes his glasses off and proceeds to reach for his wallet.
However, for a split-second, the robber turns around to threaten another shopper in the store who had been in one of the aisles. Turns out that split-second was all the cowboy needed in order to gain control of the situation.
Pouncing on the opportunity, he rushes the criminal and knocks the revolver right out of his hands.
With his elaborate robbery plan quickly falling apart, the criminal tries to make his escape. However, it’s too late. The cowboy puts the guy in a chokehold and holds on for dear life.
Another store employee runs over and grabs the gun off the ground.
For a second, the pair disappears into one of the aisles, continuing the struggle.
When the robber remerges, he is now shirtless, and brandishing a large kitchen knife. However, that is no deterrent for the cowboy.
He grabs the man and holds him in place while the store workers rush over and help to disarm the guy. The woman behind the counter calls the police.
The entire incident took place in under a minute, but sometimes that’s all it takes to change a life.
The unknown cowboy and his act of bravery will now be forever immortalized in the archives of the Internet, and the criminal.. he will likely be rotting away in jail for many years to come.
Sometimes heroes are made when we least expect it, which is certainly the case in this situation. The brave cowboy came out on top this time, but the situation could have easily gone much differently.
We can only hope that seeing this video will help deter some would-be robbers in the future from ever deciding to do something so stupid.
