An Ontario, Canada couple has just proved that true love knows no defeat.

Jim Ireland battled cancer for 8 years.

Missing the love of my life more and more every day. I wish we had more time together but I am so blessed to have so many amazing memories that I’ll never forget. I love you with my whole entire heart.

Eventually, he wound up in the intensive care unit at Kingston General Hospital.

He was on life support.

Then, his wife’s heart gave out.

His wife Cindy had a heart attack the very next day and was also placed on life support.

The couple was residing in two different hospitals.

“Me and my brother don’t drive so going between Kingston and Brockville was really rough,” Chris Mininni, their son, told CBC News.

“We tried to get mom transferred to Kingston but no one could help us.”

Then, Jim’s doctor stepped in.

Eventually, he was able to make it happen.

“I should’ve realized it wasn’t a good sign but I was so appreciative of what he did,” Chris said.

Jim pulled out his breathing tube.

Jim ended up pulling out his breathing tube during a bad dream.

He had signed orders not to resuscitate so the tube was not replaced, since there was nothing left that could be done for him.

Jim still had something to say.

“We told him that mom was now here,” Chris told PEOPLE. “He started freaking out. But when we told him he wasn’t going to make it, he got out a pen and paper and tried to write because he wasn’t able to speak.”

He wrote the word “Mom.”

So the hospital did something that they’d never done before.

They put two patients, one who was on life support and the other who just came off of it, in the same room.

“It was very risky. But they did it for them. He started bawling and saying thank you by doing the praying motion,” Chris said of his dad.

Jim grabbed his wife’s hand.

Chris decided he would snap a photo of the two of them as it was likely to be one of their last moments together on Earth.

“The reason I took it was so that when she came off life-support, she could see that Dad was right there with her,” Chris told CBC News.

“If there’s one definition of my dad, it’s that he was a proud husband and proud dad.”

The first thing Cindy asked when she woke up a few days later was whether her husband passed away.

She found comfort in knowing that she had a chance to be with her husband one more time before he passed away.

They had been married 24 years.

They were inseparable during that time.

Chris shared the special yet heartbreaking moment on Reddit with a caption that struck a chord in thousands of hearts.

“I want people to see how much love they had for each other,” he told People. “My parents got to be together until the end. We should all be so lucky.”

In the end, their love truly conquered all.
