Couple build a mini English pub in the backyard not expecting demand for them to go through the roof

June 29th, 2020

People have had a lot of time on their hands during the quarantine.

That’s led to the birth of a lot of creative endeavors.

People have been building all sorts of things.

Take Amy Casey and her husband Mark Casey for example.

They built an entire bar.

The very place that many of us are missing most since many bars are closed due to quarantine restrictions.

Casey is co-owner of Octavia Chic, a furniture painting business in Wigan, England.

She and her husband have always been into design.

They transformed rooms in their home into a Greek/Moroccan-style restaurant to celebrate their anniversary and also into a Spanish-themed restaurant this spring.

Some friends of theirs, the Crabtree family, saw pictures of their restaurant makeover and were quite fond of it.

So, the Crabtrees commissioned the Caseys to create a similar project for their home.

The Crabtrees wanted them to build an English-style pub in their garden. They wanted a garden bar!

Grandma Crabtree was diagnosed with terminal cancer during quarantine, so the pub was meant to be a surprise for her.

The family wanted grandma to enjoy pub lunches while being able to stay safe and not come in contact with others who might be sick.

Eating out at a pub was a Sunday tradition that the family would always enjoy before quarantine forced everyone inside.

“My husband and I have had a very busy few week’s working on our favourite project to date. ‘The Drunken Crab’ built, painted and interior designed for the Crabtree family who are loving having their own pub in the Garden,” Amy wrote on Facebook.

The structure was built by Mark from a kit. The bar was built by hand.

The seating area was created with an old church pew.

Amy took over when it came to interior design. She upholstered an old cushion to make the bench seating cozier. Then she outfitted the pub with vintage accessories, memorabilia, photos, furniture, all while making sure it would perfectly fit into the 11-by-11-foot space.

Amy made sure to add all the pub favorites like a dartboard with a chalkboard to keep score and a handmade pub sign.

She also added a lot of personal touches like artwork made from seashells that the Crabtree’s toddler collected during a day at the beach.

The bar was named “The Drunken Crab” in honor of the Crabtrees and took about three weeks to build.

The place looks like a real true English pub.

“There was a sense that you forgot where you actually [were]—not just in the back garden,” Amy told House Beautiful. “When all of the subtle lighting was on, our thoughts were, we have literally created a real pub.”

The Caseys ended up posting photos of The Drunken Crab on Facebook and people went wild over it.

Their post went viral with more than 35,000 shares and 63,000 comments.

They are being flooded with requests with people asking for their own backyard pub.

They’ll be working on similar projects very soon.

In the meantime, we’re all really wishing we had our own personal pub to get us through quarantine too.
