For a child battling autism, a typical school environment can be an absolutely overwhelming experience. Autism affects the brain and body in many ways that can make it difficult to cope with everyday activities. Communication is often a difficult task and some situations that many of us would find normal are loud and abrasive for a patient with autism. Since there can be a wide variety in the severity of symptoms, autism is now known as a spectrum disorder which can help to clarify and help with a child’s prognosis.

For Kenlee, certain noises can be overwhelming, and on this day, the volume level in the cafeteria was just too much to handle. She grabbed her blanket and went up on stage to lie down. The custodian saw that she was having a hard time.

While there is no cure for autism at this time, there are several known areas that can help a child deal with their symptoms. According to the National Autistic Society, “A person who struggles to deal with everyday sensory information can experience sensory overload, or information overload. Too much information can cause stress, anxiety, and possibly physical pain. This can result in withdrawal, challenging behavior or meltdown.” Knowing to be on the lookout for high-sensory environments can help parents, friends, teachers, and families be prepared to help children with an autism diagnosis.
