Makeup skills are very impressive, and it is commonly a part of a woman’s routine. It’s normal to experiment, then to mix and match for different looks, but sometimes mistake are inevitable.
Trends aren’t always worth following, especially for older women.
This list should help in avoiding common mistakes when wearing makeup, as well as knowing what looks good instead for those of a more advanced age. So read on and see which works best for you.
1. Forgetting to prep skin
Makeup artist Julia Dalton-Brush recommends the cleansing and toning of the skin. Use a facial oil and a moisturizer if needed. “Unfortunately, many people see applying makeup as the only thing they need to do, and when they do not get the flawless look they are searching for, they blame the products,” she says. “A fully hydrated and prepped face will do wonders, not only for your skin under the makeup, but also for the end result.”
2. Sticking to the same foundation
It’s different when a woman is much younger, as compared to her more mature years. Skin changes with age
According to makeup artist Annie Tevelin, skin on the face and neck becomes dry, which results in the loss of radiance. Switch from powders and matte foundations for a creamy foundation, and don’t forget your pre-skincare routine.
“Make sure to moisturize appropriately before makeup application to allow the skin to create a smoother surface so that makeup can glide on evenly,” she says. “I love wetting my makeup sponge and foundation brush to apply my moisturizer. It doesn’t leave the skin as red and warm as it does when applying moisturizer with my fingers. The cool water on the sponge or brush calms the skin and boosts radiance.”
3. Putting makeup with bad lighting
Light changes how everything looks, so use natural lighting as much as possible.
“Natural sunlight provides the most accurate reflection of your face in a mirror,” says Shira Aaron, a celebrity makeup artist based in New York. “It is by far the most flattering light.”
If there’s no natural light, choose a warm white LED light, since it resembles outside lighting most.
That concealer stick or brush is often used to hide dark circles. But the wrong shade or product could instead highlight wrinkles or lines.
“To avoid this, steer clear of thick foundations or concealers,” says celebrity makeup artist Noreen Taylor. “Instead, choose fluid ones containing luminous particles, which will make your skin look healthy and natural without overloading, so it doesn’t look like you’re wearing a mask of makeup.”
5. Not using bronzer the right way
Inexperienced home makeup artists tend to use way too much bronzer, ruining the look in the end.
“When adding bronzer to your makeup routine, think about where the sun naturally hits your skin the most: the tops of your cheekbones, gently around your hairline, and possibly around the jaw line,” Dalton-Brush says.
She suggests using a cream blush. That blends in with other makeup products for a more natural finish.
Blush can make a woman look younger, since its meant to mimic a youthful flush.
“Choose a natural rosy color that most closely resembles your actual flushed cheeks,” Aaron recommends. “Stay away from blushes that are too bright, too shimmery, or too powdery. Make sure to blend it into your skin for a more natural appearance.”
7. Applying heavy mascara on lashes
“Using mascara to accentuate the edges of the eyes can give your gaze extra expressiveness,” Taylor says. “But no matter how small those wrinkles are, thick mascara will make them stand out. Just slightly add one coat to stay safe.”
Balance out the application, making sure you give the top part the same attention as the bottom.
The upper lip thins and loses color with age, so care for your lips like any part of your body.
Tevelin suggests exfoliating once a week, then applying a hydrating lip balm. “Use brown sugar or oatmeal to naturally exfoliate,” she says. “Applying a lipstick or gloss with color and a lip liner creates the appearance of fuller and more youthful lips. Stick to colors that are your natural lip color to give the look of fuller lips.”
9. Wrong eyeshadow colors
Brown is the safest when applied to creases since it makes your eyes look alive. A natural green tone works best for the lid, but try other colors with the help of a good makeup artist.
Dark lips look good when out on an evening with the girls but it makes the lips look thin and dull during the day. Go for a lighter shade with a bit of gloss for a youthful glow.
Contouring is difficult and not everyone gets it right so the best way is to watch a video tutorial, then be sure to blend well with two foundations. If in doubt, go to a makeup artist for help.
It’s easy to focus on the face but a lot of women forget the neck. Remember that aging affects the skin and your neck will reveal the same.
13. Single color eyeshadow
Never use the same color on your eyes. Try different colors for the crease and above the eye, but be sure your color choices match well.
Clean those brushes once a week or month with a bit of shampoo. They last for a long time but they do get dirty so bring them back to life.
This happens when lipstick bleeds onto the skin, making it lose its definition. Go for a good quality lip pen or a lipstick brush, starting in the center and brushing outward for more definition.
16. Matching makeup with clothes
Your look will end up screaming loudly. Go for cool or warm colors. Not everyone can get away with red lipstick and a red dress.
17. Never going for natural
It’s easy to go heavy with the makeup. But try going lighter, to accent your natural beauty with your features. Sometimes, less really is more.
18. The skin needs a break
Wash and moisturize your face everyday. In fact, dedicating a day with no makeup will do wonders for your face.
Glitters tend to be overdone, especially when hitting up those big events. Go for color underneath instead, then add a little shimmer on the edge for a glamorous look.
Move away from the apples of your cheeks. Apply blush to the hollows instead to avoid looking too flushed. Check out tutorials or ask experts for help if it’s a challenge for you.
Use tweezers to pluck the hairs that are out of place. Comb your brows with a dry toothbrush then fill in gaps with an eyebrow pencil. Smoothen it in to blend with the rest of your brow.
22. Using powder eyeshadow
Cream gives better texture compared to powder since an older woman’s skin has a different glow. Plus they appear more hydrating, leaving a softer, healthier look to it.
Switch your black eyeliner for brown, navy or plum. Black can be harsh on mature eyes, and they’ll draw attention to dark circles and lines so experiment with color for a softer look that goes well with your style.
24. Wrong eyeshadow colors
Go for warmer browns, greys, and natural tones. Bright blues and purples can make an older woman look overdone and even add more years to her age.
The health hazards are real so don’t risk it. Clogged pores and bacterial growth are real factors. Your skin can react to old, expired makeup. The added hassle isn’t worth it.
