Bear witness as two of the greatest West Coast Swing dancers glide across the floor, creating one of the sexiest performances you’ll ever witness.
It’s not the Lambada or the Forbidden Dance … no this is straight-up West Coast Swing.
This is one of those moments in time type videos, capturing two dancers in their prime before one was lost.
It was a tragic day when the dance world lost this legendary dancer Jason Colacino to pneumonia and complications due to an enlarged heart. He left a lasting impression on the dance world with his signature smooth movements and impeccable timing.
His style and tone can still be seen in dance competitions worldwide.
In a wonderful tribute, Gerry Zonca, the Director of the USA Swing Dance Network, said, “Success and excellence brought widespread demand for his skills, which allowed him to teach, choreograph, compete, perform, and judge all around the world.”
Jason’s long time partner is the powerhouse in a small frame, Katie Boyle.
She matches Jason step for step and proves that it takes two to tango, or in this case Swing.
These two could really steam up a dance competition. And in this video, they take West Coast Swing to a whole new level, a sexy level.
Their dancing is so scintillating that your grandma would blush.
According to Wikipedia, West Coast Swing is described as …
“a partner dance with roots in the Lindy Hop. It is characterized by an elastic look that results from its extension-compression technique of partner connection and is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor. The dance allows for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together, putting West Coast Swing in a short list of dances that emphasize improvisation.”
Jason and sure put the “steam” in improvisation. Okay, there’s no “steam” in improvisation, but they sure do know how to raise your heart rate.
Jason and Katie dance in a rhythm going from fast to slow to accentuate the rhythm of the music. They use that extension-compression technique to really heighten the chemistry of the movements.
This makes for slow-motion moments that are accentuated by the speed they enter these push-pull dance movements.
At one point the dancers give a shout out to Latin influences when they kick or flick their legs in between their partner. Taking that dance move from Latin America and incorporating it is really thrilling to watch.
Katie had this to say about Jason’s passing…
“With the shock and unexpected passing of Jason, we have all asked ourselves how could this have happened to someone so young and vibrant. On behalf of Jason’s family once again, thank you for all your kind words. It has been comforting to Jason’s parents as well as myself.”
The dance world was saddened by the passing of such a young, energetic and influential dancer. Many prominent dancers had nothing but praise for him.
“As a performer, he was elegant, graceful, dignified, and composed – never flashy or common in his choices – and the MOST sensual and athletic Swing dancer I’ve ever seen.”
– Ms. Teddy Kern, Director of Dance Manhattan Studio – New York City
He was praised for his attention to his partner.
“Jason was by far one of the sexiest men in the WCS community. His style and his focus on his partner made every girl in the building want to be Katie.”
– Brent & Kellese Key – US OPEN CHAMPIONS
The dance world will miss this legend, but his story lives on as this video and videos like it get passed around to new and old fans alike. It’s hard not to notice the unique elegance he brought to competitive dance floors around the world.
Pass this along to your would-be dance partner and let them know you are ready to cut a rug. Or if you just love to see legends in the world perform at their best, get your eyes on this video.
Jason’s skills and showmanship can live on for a long time, just what a great talent deserves.
