A few weeks ago, a 60-year old FedEx worker was called into the office of a co-worker, Josh Lewis. He then told her that he had secretly been raising money on a GoFundMe account and that he had managed to get her a new car. The 60-year old immediately broke down in tears.
Over the course of three months, 60-year old Darlene Quinn would walk home from work. The distance she had to cover was 12 miles each time, but she never complained about it. But she had no idea that her coworker, Lewis, and his boss had noticed. That’s when they decided to help her.
Lewis and his boss offered Quinn to drive her home in their cars and, eventually, they convinced her. This is how they got to know her and her situation better. Quinn’s car had broken down three months ago, but since she couldn’t afford to fix it, she decided to walk home from work- and she said, she had someone to drive her to work in the morning.
This made the two co-workers want to help Quinn. So Lewis decided to open a GoFundMe account for her, and he soon raised enough money- thanks to the donations of a hundred people- to buy her a new car. And so he did. The next day, Lewis called Quinn into his office and he surprised her with the news. Quinn was so happy she couldn’t hold back her tears.
“There’s a lot of people in this community that love you and care about you.” Lewis told Quinn in the video that he shared on Facebook. “You have inspired so many of us to do great things, about going to work and supporting ourselves, and do what we have to do.”
According to Lewis, Quinn works the 4 am shift and she had recently become a familiar face for locals, who saw her walking back from work on a daily basis.
Quinn didn’t want to share the story herself, but she trusted Lewis with telling it on her behalf. Quinn wished to thank all the 100 people who contributed to her so she can now have a new car. Not only that, but two local businesses, who wish to remain anonymous, offered free oil changes and tire service to her as needed. This will hopefully make it more affordable for Quinn to maintain her new car.
As Lewis confessed on Facebook, he wouldn’t have been in a position to help Quinn if his own friends hadn’t helped him a couple of months ago. In his post, he admitted that a few months ago he found himself in a hard situation where he needed furniture for his apartment and a vehicle. He said he wouldn’t have made it without the help he received from his good friends who he hadn’t seen in 11 years. Apparently, this was an inspiration for Lewis to pay the blessing he received forward.
Such acts make us think that there are still people out there who care for others and that restore our faith in humanity.
