In ideal scenarios, it’s parents who save the lives of their children. Not the other way around.

However, a 5-year-old from Middletown, Ohio is responsible is for saving the lives of his parents.

The 5-year-old boy reportedly walked two blocks, without shoes, to his step-grandfather’s house. When he arrived, he told his step-grandfather, Kenneth Currey, that his parents were dead.

“Mom and dad’s dead, mom and dad’s dead,” is what Currey told WCPO that the boy said.

Currey rushed back to the house with the boy and found his stepdaughter, Chelsie Marshall, and her partner, Lee Johnson, both overdosed. Johnson was found laying on the bathroom floor and Marshall was in the hallway. The boy’s 3-month-old sister was sitting in a car seat on the floor crying.

Currey immediately called 911 right away.

“I’m very proud of the boy, very proud of him, but it’s just, tragedy,” he told WLWT5.

When emergency responders arrived they revived Johnson with a dose of Narcan. He was subsequently handcuffed and put into a police car after telling authorities that he was using heroin.

Marshall did not wake up after several doses of Narcan. She was later revived at the hospital after medical personnel administered 14 doses of Narcan.

The two were charged with endangering the welfare of children and one count of disorderly conduct and were held at Middletown City Jail on a $7,500 bond.

The children were taken to the police station and the 5-year-old was given a badge for bravery. The kids were later released to the care of family members.

“This 5-year-old child, a hero, saved 3 lives today,” the police department wrote on Facebook. “They are supposed to be her guardians and never let anything bad happen to her.”

According to WLWT5, the couple acted as if the situation wasn’t a big deal after they were revived.

“Parents, wake up,” Middletown Police Chief Rodney Muterspaw said. “People that are doing this, you’re not just hurting you, you’re hurting your families and your kids. I mean this could’ve turned out really bad for two children that don’t deserve it. Hopefully they get a wake-up call. They need a wake-up call big time.”

Police are asking anyone who needs help or knows someone who needs help with addiction to call the Middletown Police so the department can help them find the help that they need.
