The simple task of cutting a cake is not really easy.
Whatever the size of the cake is that you need to slice, it’s always a challenge to get even slices, particularly with a round one.
You don’t want one to be getting a thinner, smaller slice than the others, especially when you are hosting a party. As much as possible, you want the guests to get the same sizes of cake to be fair or prevent them from saying something awkward against the piece of cake they received.
But, how many of us slice the cake unevenly most of the time?
This regularly happens when we are in a hurry to take a bite of the beautiful cake in front of us. It is also a very common occurrence when kids are around since they are more impatient with their sweet tooth.
So how do you deal with a big cake that you’ll be serving to a large crowd?
There must be a way to handle that huge cake and get perfect slices for the guests or family members. You want them to have the right portion of the cake to avoid wasting any. The body-conscious ones don’t eat too many sweets, and you know that.
So here is a valuable tip that you can learn from one of Rachael Ray’s guests in her show.
As what the guest is saying:
“You’ve made this beautiful cake for a birthday party. And now it’s so much pressure to create beautiful, even slices. And make sure that the first person you serve doesn’t get a teeny slice, and the last person gets this huge slice.”
How is it done?
Step One:
First, grab a regular bowl. One that is nearly half the size of the cake you will be cutting or perhaps ¾ in size.
Step Two:
Place the bowl facing down, and just press it a little to imprint the bowl’s circumference.
Step Three:
Grab a knife, and with the round shape you have made through the bowl, you now have a guide to slice the center of the cake.
“What this does is it almost creates a completely separate cake,” says the guest.
Step Four:
Now you can start cutting the outer ring of the cake. You can make very even slices that you possibly can.
The guest says, “And now, I can get very even slices. This way, it’s so much easier than going in to the center of the cake. And if you don’t end up needing the whole cake, you still have a beautiful cake at the center.”
We are happy to learn this cake-cutting hack that not everybody is familiar with.
You want to give everyone that slice of cake that they can completely consume. Of course, it’s a bonus if you can keep the center of the cake intact. This works great when you want to reserve the rest for tomorrow or for the days to come.
How brilliant is this technique!
This is not really a new thing though. Most bakers, caterers, and those who work in the restaurants cut the big cakes this way to get the right slices for everybody.
Some home bakers have been using this bowl technique of cutting a cake for many years after they learned this because they now find it time-saving. But some friends of theirs actually find it weird and hilarious.
Lucy Roy comments on the video:
“So funny, that is exactly how I was taught to cut a cake. My friends think I’m weird, but it really works. LOL”
Now that you have learned this awesome cake-cutting method, try doing it the next time and see how this can work for you.
Even if It’s not a big cake you need to slice, just remember to use a smaller bowl for tracing the center.
