And the crowd goes wild

The video, from Good Morning America, discusses the world famous “Invisible Box Challenge.” It’s a short gravity defying maneuver where the challenge seems to use an invisible box to take a step. The trick is that there are no ropes, no camera tricks, the challenger literally looks like they are stepping on air.

Good Morning America shows clips from the cheerleaders video to show how incredible it can look. Watch how the cheerleader’s right foot remains almost perfectly level as she steps over the invisible box with her left foot. It s easy to see why social media exploded with imitators attempting the challenge.

Where it all began

But the cheerleader’s challenge video wasn’t the first. It was just the one that took off and went viral. Good Morning America reveals that the first known “Invisible Box Challenge” video actually belongs to football player Dontez Hines of Anderson University.

Dontez’ video has the same set up, taking place on an empty football field. He sweeps his hands over the invisible box and raises a foot to about the same point. Then, in a show of athleticism, he steps over the invisible box nailing the very first Invisible Box challenge.

Showing her work

Since the cheerleader’s video was the one to take off, Good Morning America reached out to her to find out how it was done. She was kind enough to put out a video demonstrating the trick and explaining how it works.

She starts off by showing that there are no tricks in place, including ropes or boxes to be edited out in post. After demonstrating the trick, Good Morning America explains that it’s all about keeping your raised foot level and using your core muscles to leap your back foot over the invisible box and landing nice and level.

The viral effect

Whether fans saw Hines’ video or either of the cheerleaders, it’s easy to see why this challenge went viral. People from all across the world recorded their own attempts at the challenge with varying degrees of success. Good Morning America focuses on some of the failed attempts, showing less than stellar results with a few funny stumbles.

Even now that the challenge has hit mainstream media, you can still find brand new attempts posted daily. While time will tell if anyone hits the viral appeal of either of the originals, this is a trend that isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

Why is this so popular?

Like planking, it’s a seemingly simple act that takes a whole lot of skill and body strength and muscle control. It’s not something that you can easily do one day on a whim. That makes sense when you realize that the very first videos were done by a cheerleader and football player, both very athletic activities.
