Tattoos used to give negative impressions. Nowadays, ink is a fashion statement, especially when famous people sport their own and flash them in public. Each design has a story behind it, though others may be vague or unclear as to its history.
Good artists can make a tattoo pop with intricate details and striking colors. Celebrities don’t always announce or display their ink though so here are some with surprising ink work done.
1. Emma Stone
Emma Stone and her mother got matching tattoos designed by former Beatles member Paul McCartney. The design for their body art of choice represents mother and daughter’s favorite song “Blackbird.”

2. Sienna Miller
Sienna Miller does has a few dainty tattoos here and there. Designs range from a bird on her wrist and some stars on her shoulder.

3. Victoria Beckham
You wouldn’t know it but Victoria Beckham had a lot of tattoos. There was one on her spine, which read, “I am my love’s and my love is mine, who browses among the lilies,” in Hebrew. Reports do say she had them removed.
4. Heidi Klum
Heidi Klum’s ex-husband, “Seal,” once had his name tattooed on her arm, but she had the body art removed for obvious reasons.
5. Charlize Theron
The lovely Charlize Theron has a few tats of her own, including a koi fish on her ankle and a lotus flower on her foot.
6. Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere did have skin art but reportedly had it removed. She had “Vivere senza rimpianti,” tattoed, meaning “live without regrets” on her ribcage. Apparently, the tattoo was misspelled. She does have a new one on the back of her neck.
7. Jamie Fox
Jamie Foxx’s tattoo is on his head. He got it on his 40th birthday.
8. Lea Michele
Lea Michele and Corey Monteith once got matching tattoos. She also got a tattoo of the last words that Monteith spoke to her, “If you say so.”
9. Miranda Kerr
Australian model Miranda Kerr has a small tattoo on her arm done in white ink.
10. Penélope Cruz
Spanish actress Penélope Cruz has the number 883 tattooed on her ankle. She never revealed the meaning of it although she does love numerology.
11. Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore’s toe has a tattoo of a heart. She said, “That’s my attempt at being a rebellious rock star. It didn’t really work.”
12. Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett got a tattoo after winning an Oscar in 2014. She hit up a parlor with Amy Adams and some friends. Apparently, the tattoo shop is friends with the actress.
13. Amanda Seyfried
Amanda Seyfried’s foot has the word “minge” tattooed on it. She says of the ink, “Colin Firth used to say that word on set and Rachel (McDowell) had to explain to me what it meant. So it’s on my foot. It’s to make me laugh, and every time I look at it I do.”
14. Cheryl Cole
It’s the size and detail of Cheryl Cole’s tattoo that captures attention. It’s a rose tattoo that covers her lower back, butt, and legs. And she doesn’t shy away from showing it.
15. Winston Churchill
Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, had a tattoo of an anchor on his forearm which was unusual for the time.
16. Christina Ricci
Known for playing unusual characters with a dark edge, actress Christina Ricci has a lion on her right shoulder, which is a reference to her favorite novel “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”.
17. Helen Mirren
Dame Helen Mirren’s small tattoo on her left hand serves as a reminder for her to “love thy neighbor.” The 77-year-old got the tattoo while “very drunk” with American Indians in Minnesota.
18. Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt has a lot of tattoos which he usually keeps hidden. Some can be seen like the one on his arm that reads “There exists a field, beyond all notions of right and wrong. I will meet you there.”
19. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has an “M” tattooed on her left wrist. She has never revealed the meaning, though the two possibilities of what it stands for are her older brother’s name, Michael, or her mother’s maiden name, McCauley.
20. Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts had the names of her children and her husband’s initials tattooed on her back. The 54-year-old actress remains to this day a very “Pretty Woman”.
21. Sandra Bullock
Actress Sandra Bullock has a small tattoo found on her upper back. Viewers noticed it in her film “The Proposal”.
22. Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston’s foot has the name “Norman” tattooed on it. That’s her dog who died in 2011 so she got it as a tribute to her furry friend.
23. Ben Affleck
People know about Ben Affleck’s smaller tattoos. There’s a ring of barbed wire around a bicep, a fish with a skull and crossbones on his arm, initials on his shoulder blade, and a dolphin on his right hip. But people were surprised by the giant tattoo of a phoenix rising on his upper back.
The rumors are that it symbolizes his split from Jennifer Garner.
24. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson has a sunset on her forearm and a horseshoe on her ribcage. At the 2018 Emmy’s, she revealed a large, colorless roses and thorns across her upper back.
The ink was first spotted when Johansson was filming “Infinity War in 2017″, but many thought it was fake. Nope.
25. Mena Suvari
43-year-old actress Mena Suvari has several tattoos. Lucky her since her boyfriend is tattoo artist Salvador Sanchez. That makes it easier for touch ups and add ons.
