Heidi said that her boyfriend Josh’s hair had gotten so long and so out of control, she could no longer see his face.
Back in 2003, Oprah received a letter from a woman saying her boyfriend had gone from “clean-cut to caveman.” After seeing their pictures and hearing their stories, Oprah invited Josh, joined by his girlfriend Heidi, to her show for a total makeover.
“I like his look, I just want it to be a little less…umm…hairy,” Heidi said before the transformation.
Josh is 38-years-old and hasn’t had a haircut, or shaved, in years. He started growing out his hair when he left the military.
Not only did Heidi want Josh to cut his long hair and scraggly beard, but she also wanted him to get an updated wardrobe. As she sees it, he dressed like “The Fonz” — blue jeans, white t-shirt, and black boots. Heidi said that this was Josh’s outfit choice every day of the week.
“I dare you to make me look better than I do right now,” Josh joked during his interview.
Tim Gunn, a celebrity stylist, and host of Project Runway decided to take on the challenge of giving Josh a complete makeover.
As the transformation began, Josh was very hesitant about getting his hair cut, and beard shaved. The stylists performing the makeover had to take baby steps and provide a bit of “counseling” through the entire process as well.
After the transformation is complete, it’s time for the big reveal to the audience, and of course, Heidi. The “before” picture of Josh is up on the screen as Oprah invites him back on the stage to show everyone his brand new look.
Josh reveals his transformative makeover as he walks back on stage. His cropped hair and trimmed beard make him hardly unrecognizable to the “caveman” we saw before.
“That looks good! That looks good!” Oprah says before Josh runs over to give her a hug and kiss on the cheek. The hunky, transformed man also shakes Tim Gunn’s hand for being the mastermind behind such a drastic change.
“I feel like a new man,” Josh tells Oprah about his new, hip, clean look.
Oprah tells Josh that the first time she saw him, the only way she could describe his new look, was “biblical.”
“How do you make them look like who they are, but keep them polished, and sophisticated, and belong to the century? So, that’s what we attempted to do,” Tim Gunn explained about his process of giving makeovers.
Of course, Heidi couldn’t have been more thrilled about the cleaned-up look. She was happy that he kept some facial hair and his work boots because it was still “Josh,” just a better version.
