Just when you thought there was nothing to smile about, here comes Freddie Meowcury and Queen with a 2021 re-release of “Bohemian Catsody”.
It’s a rhapsody parody that’s only eight days old but has already racked up over 1.4 million views. And I’m willing to bet Freddie would have loved this as he was a cat person himself!
In the ’70s, Freddie’s girlfriend Mary Austin gifted him a pair of cats named Tom and Jerry. Freddie loved those two so much that he would call and check in on them when he was on the road.
Then there was Tiffany, Oscar, Goliath, Lily, Miko, Dorothy, Delilah and Romeo.
Mercury loved them so much that he dedicated his 1985 solo album Mr. Bad Guy to his pets, and to “all the cat lovers across the universe,” before adding, “screw everybody else!”
He also wrote the song Delilah for one of his favorite cats. Delilah was included on Queen’s 1991 album Innuendo.
True to Queen’s original music video, these cats are positioned like a diamond against a black background, their heads the only thing visible while they blend their voices to the song’s melody.
“Mama, just killed a mouse
Ate it all except the head
That’s your present on your bed
Mama, a sign of my love
Why did you scream and throw it all away?”
The writing is absolutely brilliant!
Posted by Shirley Șerban, she’s a New Zealand woman with a penchant for creating parody songs. She’s been really active with her work since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nothing prepares you for the hit of four cats arranged the way they are as they harmonize and belt out the Queen classic. It’s jarring so to speak, and it can alter the mood.
She writes,
“Cats are royalty. We are their willing servants.”
Especially the part where the cats meow along to the instrumental operatic bit. Kneel, servant.
It’s a fur-midable ensemble of talent to be sure. The song is there, but there’s just something about the way Shirley executed this rendition that sends shivers up and down the body.
A viewer named Allan Herrod loved it. He said,
“As a certified cat maniac, I can say with confidence that this is purrfect! I have been working on my own parody of Bohemian Rhapsody for months and just can’t get it right. Doing justice to Freddie is not something to take lightly. And here you have done TWO stellar versions while I am still trying to muster the gumption to finish ONE. Four paws up! You are the champion!”
On that note, maybe Shirley could do more Queen songs with her cats…
Her lyrics for “Bohemian Catsody” are on point though. Cat owners will find themselves chuckling to this version before unconsciously memorizing the words to the same iconic melody. Fur real.
This is mew-sic to the ears!
