Cancer is scary.

In the year 2018, a total of 1.7 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed with more than half a million (609,640) dying from the disease. The battle against cancer is a long, exhausting fight— one that many don’t make it out of alive.

Kirby Evans, 65, managed to kick cancer’s butt. Unfortunately, he lost his left eye and nose in the process.

The senior is on a fixed budget and can’t afford the surgery to close the opened areas. He’s tried using an eye patch, but the cloth rubs him raw. In the end, the best solution is simply to keep the area open.

Now, at first, Kirby’s appearance may draw a few odd glances, but he’s never encountered any problems— until he decided to stop at the Forks Pit Stop in Walterboro, South Carolina. According to reports, Kirby had dined at the gas station many times before. But an incident that happened last week left him shaken to the core.

On October 8th, Kirby entered the store to buy some food.

According to a Facebook post written by his daughter Brandy Evans, Kirby bought a pack of donuts and a drink. The gas station also has a section with tables where patrons can dine. He planned to eat his food there before leaving. Before he could be seated, however, something unexpected occurred.

Donna Crosby, the owner, grabbed Kirby by his shirt and dragging him into her office. She then told him if he wanted to eat there, he’d have to cover his face.

In an interview with Live 5 News, Kirby described the incident saying: “I feel somebody reach up and grab me like this and jerk me into her office.”

“It hurt deep inside. I’ve never been treated like that ever.”

As you can imagine, the senior was devastated.

In Brandy’s post, which has since gone viral, she wrote:

“My father is the strongest man I know, but as he told me what happened to him, I watched tears roll out of his eye.”

“It hurt me to see him hurt like this, especially over something he cannot help.”

Brandy says her father has been discriminated against because of the way that he looks: “I thank God everyone is not as small-minded as Donna Crosby [owner]! I promise you he will never set foot in that store again.”

Donna Crosby, commented on Brandy’s post, claiming she didn’t mean to hurt Kirby but had no choice: “It was running my customers off.”

She couldn’t be reached for a comment.

But Live 5 News did manage to get a hold of her husband. He said Crosby’s emotionally upset and can’t talk about what happened. He also says the accusations are not true. Employees at the Fork Pit Stop also shared she hasn’t been back to work since the incident occurred.

Since posting her father’s experience, Brandy’s post has gone completely viral.

People can’t believe someone could have the gall to say those comments, and many people are not wishing Crosby the best. Comments on the post read:

“It takes a real lowlife to do something like that.”

“Think I will go over and ask her to cover her face before I buy my items because I CAN’T STAND TO LOOK AT HER!!”

“Who the Hell do you think you are, asking someone to cover their face or come back when it’s not so busy. Shame on you … I know karma is waiting for you big time! Hope the diner closes down!”

The local community rallied behind Kirby, and Brandy even created a GoFundMe to help him pay for his surgery costs.

They succeeded in raising more than their goal, with the fundraiser currently sitting at a whopping $78,541.

“Everybody is showing me so much support right now. I thank God for that,” he said.

“It made me feel good. It made my heart feel good. It made me feel like there is love in this world. Hate is wrong. I took that out of my vocabulary long ago.”
