A New South Wales woman who was previously told by her doctors that she “would never be able to have children” later found out that she’s pregnant with triplets and has now given birth to her babies. She’s Samara McDonald and this is her amazing story.
In 2010, Samara got diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She was only 15 years old then. After two relapses, and various rounds of radiation and chemotherapy, the strong teen finally went into remission at the age of 17. However, she received devastating news about her future as a mother: that she will never be able to have children ever.
At the time, her boyfriend turned out to be cheating on her and she was not thinking about entering into a romantic relationship soon. But, when she met Uram Kim while working at a Japanese restaurant in 2017, everything suddenly changed.
She was hesitant at the beginning Uram’s charm eventually won Samara’s heart. They dated for eight months before Uram had to go back to Korea because his Australia visa was about to expire. Samara followed him there and together, they started a life of their own.
The couple went to Yeonggwang, Uram’s hometown. It was an exciting adventure for the couple but Uram was also concerned about all that was happening in their life together.
“It was another adventure to me, because before meeting Samara I was looking after [just myself], but suddenly I had to look after me and a foreigner girl,” he told ABC. “I felt like she was giving up everything for me.”
However, his worries were not needed after all. Samara may be a foreigner, but she instantly fit right into the Korean lifestyle.
“She liked my family and Korean culture, food, internet speed … and she looked after herself very well, so I didn’t need to worry about her.”
Everything was going perfectly for the couple as they do their best in making memories together and building their relationship and life as a couple. They surely weren’t expecting the incredible news that they were about to receive.
One day, Samara just started to get sick and she would vomit regularly. It was as if she contacted a virus and he could not shake it from her system. Fearing the worst, she decided to go to a local doctor with Uram.
“There was no thought it my mind that I was pregnant. I thought I could be sick again,” she says.
The news they got from the physician was not at all what she feared. Speaking in the native language, the doctor confirmed that Samara was pregnant with not one, not two but three babies!
“It’s not a single baby, ‘Look — one, two, three’,” Uram laughs as he recalls the initial ultrasound. “[I thought] what? Please stop counting.”
To say that the couple was shocked was an understatement. They were definitely stunned, but after some time, they were able to think clearer and decided to go back to Australia due to healthcare and support reasons.
Uram did not mind going back to New South Wales and thinks that being with the people he loves is more important than the place they are living in. He was actually glad to be returning to Australia.
“I really didn’t want to leave Australia because of beautiful nature and peaceful lifestyle, ” Uram shared.
Finally, Samara gave birth to three healthy babies and the young couple took the first step to being parents. Blessed with one daughter and two sons, Samara and Uram had to deal with taking care and providing for their children. Holding the little ones was quite a challenge for them, especially for Samara who has not held a baby before her own.
“It’s such pressure holding something that’s so little and so beautiful. It was the first time I had ever held babies,” she says. “When we first got the babies home, I think me and Uram were in complete shock. But it was a feeling like nothing else in the world.”
If Samara would describe her current situation, she would fondly say that their life is “very chaotic, with a lot of purpose and love”. She is really happy with the triple blessing that she got even though she used to think that she will never have this chance after her treatments for cancer.
“I’m grateful for any challenges I’ve had to go through, because it’s brought me here now,” she says.
On top of all that has happened in her life, she is very thankful that she had found a life partner in Uram.
“Uram has kind of been my rock; very patient with me and the babies. He does most of the diaper changes and helps me out with all the baby needs,” Samara shares further.
Uram has recently returned to working as a kitchen hand after helping Samara as a full-time parent when their triplets were born. He finds it as a huge responsibility but seeing the smiles and hearing the giggles of his kids makes him forget about being tired.
Now, this young couple is in their 20’s and are doing their best to take care of and provide for their three children. Their story only shows that no one can really tell what the future holds. Samara was once told about the thing that she cannot do anymore but obviously, fate has other plans for her.
