Carlos De Antonis, an Argentinan singer now residing in Miami, stunned the judges and the audience of America’s Got Talent when he auditioned and performed the classical musical masterpiece Nessum Dorma from Puccini.
Carlos works as a taxi driver for the Lyft service and loves to sing while he’s driving around – and his customers seem to enjoy it a lot as well. In fact, it was one of his customers that told him he should audition for the popular talent show because of his amazing voice.
At a first glance, Carlos’ personality immediately shines. He comes up on the stage as an incredibly charming, humble and likable person wearing sunglasses. Although the judges might think that Carlos wasn’t taking the audition very seriously, that all changed when the first note started to hit.
Countless people have covered the classic aria, but the rendition from Carlos De Antonis certainly is something special and absolutely must-see. Carlos’ voice is incredibly strong, clear, and full of passion.
The taxi driver impresses the judges and the audience with a phenomenal singing performance, and it doesn’t take long before the crowd gives the man a well-deserved standing ovation. The judges follow – and even Simon Cowell joins in for a very rare standing ovation.
In the closing moments of the song, Carlos is seen mimicking his steering wheel subconsciously, as if he was just driving around with a passenger. “His hand’s still on the steering wheel,” judge Howie Mandel notices.
When his performance comes to end, his personality shines even brighter. The man is clearly very emotional and moved to tears when he sees the standing ovation and hears the deafening applauses from the audience.
The comments from the four judges were all overwhelmingly positive, with Simon even stating that Carlos was one of the most likable people that have ever auditioned for the show.
“Amazing,” Howie shouts. “You are so giving. Do the people in your cabs request this, or does this just break out in the middle of a ride?”
Carlos then says that sometimes he takes requests, but it happens naturally as well while playing around with his pair of sunglasses in a comedic manner.
“You’re a nut, but an amazing nut,” Howie then says.
“You sing with such passion that comes right from the depth and you just spread it all out. It was brilliant. I felt it all.”
Of course, Simon Cowell certainly had to comment on this brilliant performance as well.
“I don’t know an awful lot about classical music. But let me tell you why I love doing this show. Because the only people that matter on this show are the audience. And when they love somebody, they love someone.”
What a fantastic audition!
