An Unexpected Hero

Two kids, a 6-year-old boy, and a 2-year-old girl were reportedly wearing no winter clothes and were dressed in only a T-shirt, boots and a diaper. The moment Nicole saw kids wandering alone in the freezing cold was caught on camera. Seeing the kids, Nicole remarked: ‘Those kids don’t have clothes on.’ She immediately jumped to the rescue while other passengers observed the dramatic situation.

Nicole stopped the bus and rushed outside to let the children find shelter from the bitter cold inside the vehicle.

“They were headed towards a busy intersection, and I knew there was no school bus stop down there or school, so I knew right away I had to pull over and help them,” Nicole told WISN.

When asked by Nicole why were they outside in the snow and the wind chills, the children said they were looking for their grandma.

“I said, ‘Come with me, I’m going to put you on the warm bus, and I’ll help you find grandma,’” Nicole told the media. “And so they came with me. I picked them up, put them on my bus, and called the police.”

A bus driver goes out of her way to help two kids wearing nothing but T-shirts in 18-degree weather

“No one had a coat on,” Chamberlain explained later. “Little girl had on a T-shirt and diaper. Little boy had on a T-shirt and pants.”

While waiting for the police to arrive to help reunite the children with their parents, Nicole took off the coat she was wearing and used it wrap up the girl’s exposed legs and keep her warm. Nicole’s selfless act was caught on surveillance camera and the video soon attracted attention after it reached the public.

“They saw all the commotion and came over to the bus and there we were with the kids,” Nicole said when the police arrived. Soon after the arrival of police officers, the children’s grandma showed up and explained the boy had sneaked out of the house while she was in the basement. His sister followed him out in the cold.

The kids were safely reunited with their parents

Nicole’s timely rescue likely prevented the kids from getting frostbite out there in the freezing cold and wind. The most important thing for Nicole is that she was able to help.

“I’m just thrilled I was in the right place and right time, but even more thrilled the situation turned out to be even better than what you hear sometimes,” Chamberlain told the media. “They went back, they were with a happy family. They were safe. That was most important to me.”

Nicole saved the day and greatly contributed to this story’s happy ending.
