When Will Claussen got married, he couldn’t think of anyone he’d rather have at his side as his best man than his brother and best friend Henry.
Will and Henry, who has Down syndrome, have always been extremely close growing up.
Will was actually the was the first person to ever hear Henry speak. So, Will knew that the only person that could be the first man in his wedding was Henry.
“He has the sweetest soul and has never said a bad word about anyone, so it was a no-brainer for him to be my best man,” Will told In The Know.
And if he was going to ask one of his favorite people a big important question, he wanted to make sure he did it in a special way.
Will and his partner put together a ruse to surprise Henry with the question: “Will you be my best man?”
The couple hid a message in a bottle in the ground for Henry to find with a metal detector.
Will starts waving around a metal detector and asks Henry to start digging when he “found something.”
Henry starts digging and eventually hits something solid.
“You hit something,” Will tells Henry.
Henry then lifts the glass bottle from the dirt.
“Is that a message inside?” Will’s partner asks Henry.
But Henry was a little suspect.
“Did you bring this here?” he asked his brother.
Will begins to pull the note out of the bottle as Henry reaches over to see what he’s got.
“It could be a prank,” Henry says.
That’s when Will finally pulls it out and reads the note to his brother.
“Henry Joe, you are already the BEST bro, and my very BEST friend, so will you please say yes and be my BEST man?”
“What?!” Henry exclaims.
“Do you wanna be my best man?” Will asks again.
But he doesn’t get an answer. He gets a brother that drops his shovel and the bottle and leaps into his arms.
Henry couldn’t have been happier, and he sure was showing it. He just wrapped his legs around his big bro and held tight. With tears in his eyes, he eventually said “Yes!” Henry told his brother that he loved him and the two continued their hug for a little bit longer.
“He loves metal detecting so I knew this was a no-brainer and he had no clue it was coming,” Will said.
The video of Will’s surprise proposal to his brother was posted on Caters Clips’ YouTube page where it was viewed more than 5.8 million times.
“Henry and I are very humbled by all the kind words and comments to the point where it’s been hard to wrap our heads around. We are grateful,” Will said.
