When a falafel house was broken into by a thief, the owner of the restaurant responded with a letter of kindness. That’s what happens when you mess with the restaurant voted one of the “nicest places in America”.

Yassin Terou owns a falafel shop in Knoxville, TN.

Yassin was a Syrian refugee who fled his country ravaged by war seven years ago. When he came to America, he didn’t speak English but he fought the hate he encountered with love and thanks to his positive and loving outlook on life, he has become a successful business owner.

Yassin told Good Morning America that he feels he “had a second chance of life to be in United States” and added “When you love and give your love to people, you are stronger than one who gives hate.”

When his shop was broken into one night, Yassin left a loving message to the thief.

Sadly Yassin found shattered glass one morning as a thief had attempted to break in and rob his store. But every night, the store empties its registers and since the food is baked fresh every morning, there wasn’t anything left for the intruder to take. Yassin could have responded with hate but that’s not in Yassin’s nature. He understood that the person probably needed help, so he pinned this note to his window:

“If you are hungry or need emergency money, just wait til we are open because our food is fresh made in the mornings and our register is empty when we are closed! We are more than happy to help when we are open! All we need is love…..and falafel!”

His selflessness and love for his community put aside the pain and hassle of being broken into. Yassin and his staff truly care about those around them and this is just another example of how they put their words into action.

Yassin’s Falafel House was awarded by Readers Digest on being one of their Nicest Place In America. But out of Yassin’s humility and love for his customers, he passed the credit for the award on to the city, state, and America.

“Yassin’s Falafel House is about family, about love, about building community,” Yassin Terou said. “So we make sure when you get your food, you smile and feel love with it.”

Even the mayor of Knoxville sees the difference that Yassin has made in their community, and praises him for helping the community for being more welcoming.

Yassin now owns two falafel houses and is a shining example of how dedication, hard work, and love for other people can get you ahead in life. His humbling outlook and ability to look past hate has allowed many people to benefit and share in the love that is shared at his restaurant.

We can all learn by Yassin’s example of love and kindness.
