Walking away from a troubled marriage is no easy task. It’s difficult for the parents and especially difficult for the children. Despite their hardships over the last year, mother-daughter duo Ana and Fia Almanda were determined to live a positive life that even brings joy to others.
That’s why they decided to audition for Britain’s Got Talent.
Ana and Fia, who are originally from Indonesia, explained to judges that the two of them had been singing for less than a year and that their family and friends encouraged them to sing together.
That’s when they were caught off guard by judge Amanda Holden’s question asking what Ana’s husband thought of them singing together.
“I had a really bad, difficult marriage and I recently I had to take the kids out from the home and left for good. And now we’re here and it’s our fresh start,” Ana said smiling at her daughter. “I’m hoping for a better future for us.”
Ana told RadioTimes backstage that she was not prepared to discuss her family situation on on TV.
“It’s still upsetting for me and my children,” Ana said. “We didn’t expect Amanda to say that all. It was out of the blue. She didn’t know.”
She told RadioTimes that she was nervous but you would never know it once the mother and daughter began to sing the Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion duet “Tell Him.” Fia started out with an impressive soulful soprano sound and her mother came in super strong and wowed the judges with her alto voice.
Their voices beautifully melded together prompting the crowd to give them a standing ovation mid-way through their performance.
By the end of their song, the two hugged as Fia put her head on Ana’s shoulder. They hugged and kissed each other as all four judges leapt to their feet to clap after their song concluded.
“This is the best thing you could possibly do under the circumstances to show that you two are completely strong, united, put on the most amazing performance and the audience here also loved it,” judge Simon Cowell said.
Fia and Ana were surprised by the judges’ reactions to say the least.
“We never thought that we would get a standing ovation from the four judges and the audience went crazy!” Ana told The Jakarta Post. “So we were overwhelmed and as emotional as the audience.”
