New York-based street artist Tom Bob has brought the mundane to life all over the world. His colorful creations force us to see everything from municipal equipment to street furniture in a whole new way.
While most of his work can be found in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he’s also left his creations everywhere from NYC, to Dubai, Switzerland, Taiwan, Las Vegan, and Long Beach, California.
Ahead, you can find our 75 favorite pieces by the artist. And if you want to see what the spaces looked like before (or more of his wonderful art), simply visit his Instagram page for more whimsy.
1. CLOSE YOUR EYES, BREATHE, RELAX
Imagine seeing this empty space and coming up with this end product. That’s the beauty of an artist’s eye.
But do the kids still know what a Walkman is?
2. YOGA FROG
You can find this little guy doing his handstand in New Bedford as well.
3. IT WAS LIKE RUNNING INTO A BRICK WALL!
The artist turned this exhaust vent into a faceguard at the corner of NW 1st Ave and NW 23rd.
4. ROBOTS
We wonder if more students were inspired to go into art or engineering as a result. (But who says you can’t do both?!)
5. POPPIN WHEELIES
He also visited the autoshop to turn this four-wheeler into a two-wheeler.
6. BIRD LOVE
Here’s what the gas shut-off valve boxes looked like before.
A colorful improvement for all the kids to appreciate, to be sure.
7. SNAKE BUSTIN-OUT
We wonder if that painting is worth more or less now.
8. PUFFERFISH
This broken sign pole is now a pufferfish.
We’d probably avoid stepping on this guy if we could.
9. BREAK ON THROUGH
The local middle school got its sidewalk safety strip painted into a band-aid over a faux crack. And nothing is stopping this little flower’s power.
10. Grid
We’d say these count as an improvement to everything he touched.
It gives you just a little more insight into what you’ll find when you visit his Instagram page.
11. “BREAK A LEG”
It looks like there’s about to be a second broken leg as well!
12. TIGER
If you’re visiting, head to the corner of NW 23 Tt. & NW 5th Avenue to see the transformation of this manhole cover and water drain.
It’s grrrrrreat!
13. CATERPILLAR
When he posted a picture of the original, most people imagined he would turn it into a submarine. But artists are unpredictable like that!
14. JACK-O-LANTERN
We wonder if they bring back the candy corn traffic cones every year – we sure hope so!
We’ll never look at them the same way again.
15. FLY
Tom Bob turned this security camera in Vetroz, Switzerland into something far more welcoming (though it’s still surveilling).
16. RACCOON
Unlike a real raccoon.
17. SPIDERS
Our favorite part of this piece in Vetroz, Switzerland is the netting-turned web.
18. ZEBRA
This little guy is living in New Bedford and no doubt drawing lots of attention.
19. WHALES HIDING OUT
New Bedford, MA is an old whaling town, which makes this roof art extra special.
20. ALIEN SIGHTING
But this one is drawing more attention than the rest now that it’s become the location of a UFO invasion.
What would aliens think of humanity if the first thing they saw was Las Vegas?
21. BLUE BIRD
We’re not sure if the TomBob-ified electrical meter is still tweeting now that another pizza joint has opened up in the same spot, but we sure hope so!
22. PIZZA TIME
We’re getting a distinct Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pizza vibe here.
Did they ever order anything as simple as a pepperoni?
23. MAY THE 4th BE WITH YOU
That makes this former fire hydrant recognizable in its new form to just about everyone walking by it in Long Beach.
24. CHILL PILL
But if you want this one, you’ll have to head to Codazzi, Colombia where a unique graffiti museum in an abandoned distillery lies deep in the jungle.
(Yes, seriously.)
25. I GOT A NIKON CAMERA…
This is one more cool Tom Bob piece on display in the former distillery there.
26. SAY AHHH!
This guy reminds us of Mr. Peanut, but way cooler.
27. SNAKE
Cue Tom Bob who turned this South Beach spa’s air vent into the most glamorous of gliders.
And those lashes!
28. LADY AND THE TRAMP
We’re sure the kids at Santa Clara Elementary School in Miami are enjoying it too.
29. DRAGONFLY
But there’s no doubt customers don’t mind having someone spruce up something as mundane as an emergency light.
Especially when it becomes a rather fabulous dragonfly.
30. KATIE EDDINGTON
Now she’s 9 and, according to Tom Bob, “she runs, swims, plays basketball & soccer.”
31. RISE & SHINE
If the hashtags are anything to go by, this was part of the Wide Open Walls art festival in 2018 in which artists applied to come decorate the city.
32. STORMY WEATHER
Sure beats an old antenna at the top of a chimney!
33. SNAKE IN THE GRASS
In order to get the title of the piece you have to look in the lower left corner.
34. CLAWS UP!!
These New Bedford gas meters got the Tom Bob touch – and we’re pretty sure this is one of our favorites!
35. KEY TO YOUR HEART
Once just a bike rack, it’s now the key to someone’s heart in California.
36. PSST!! WANNA BUY SOME TIME?
This is probably the only alleyway we’d happily walk down in order to see a guy selling watches.
These electrical meters-turned-illicit goods can be found off Solana Ct. & W. La Reina.
Just tell him you know a guy.
37. GLOBAL WARMING
That polar bear is living up his last moments.
38. GNOME DOWN!!
This guy has seen better days as he become permanent street art in Williamsburg.
39. ROAD KILL!
The minute it’s picked up, it’ll lose its central feature. But will people still be able to tell what was there?
40. TIME FOR A CHANGE?
We’ll never be able to look at a whole line of them the same way again.
41. RINGO STARR
Tom Bob even made sure to highlight the iconic Ludwig drum brand that the icon used since childhood.
42. IF I ONLY HAD A HEART
Just don’t let the ax fool you, he really does have a heart!
43. BRUSH EM’ UP!
While the artist posts pictures of the spaces before he begins painting them, no one correctly guessed what this one was going to become.
44. MONKEY METERS
We’re starting to think New Bedford, where most of Tom Bob’s art is, is going to be our next road trip destination!
45. JUMP ROPE GIRL
We love that she’s in motion in a different way at different times of the day.
46. Was Kilroy here?
What do you think they’re afraid of – just how long the project is going to take?
These were out and about a few years ago in Boston, MA.
47. Good times at the dentist
This vent was already full of metal, but now it knows the real meaning of a metal mouth.
48. HELP!!
But that stuff tends to be heartier than most humans, so we’re not sure it needs our help.
49. Blinky is coming
But we have to admit that he’s pretty charming as a manhole cover.
50. FOREEEEE!!!
We like this Titleist one in particular since it’s a lot like our ball – not going very far.
51. FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY, STING LIKE A BEE!!
We like this former salt spreader better as a bumblebee, even if he looks a little bummed.
52. PRISON BRAKE!
Stripes are in outside this pawn shop’s parking lot.
53. “YOU’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOAT”
This old fan makes a great boat propeller – even if they are going to need a bigger boat.
54. Snakey standpipe
Normally we’re not keen to see a snake in the grass, but this one is a nice surprise.
55. BALANCING ACT
Even without the perfect shadow, this balancing act on a chain-link fence would be darling.
56. FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS
But the truth of its identity lies on the wall in the alley.
57. ELEPHANT SIGHTING!
Alas, the elephants he mentions in his caption – Emily and Ruth – are still at the Buttonwood Park Zoo instead of in an elephant sanctuary.
58. Nature is smiling
This can be found in charming Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
59. CRITTER ON CANAL STREET
The fire hydrant and fireplug might have gotten some use in that time and since nothing lasts forever – especially something as ephemeral as paint on the streets and things people touch every day – it’s probably less vibrant than it once was.
But it’s a good lesson in how the world takes its toll on us all.
60. The cool kids
It’s too bad kids these days no longer have boomboxes.
Those were even more effective than skateboards when it came to scandalizing the grown-ups.
61. MONDAY…
With the hashtag #marlonbrando, we can now see that this cinderblock was painted with a distinctively Brando vibe.
But the tear screams MONDAY instead of STELLA!
62. Mundane meets luxe
You can find it in Manhattan (where, incidentally, a lot of aspirational Chanel #5 can be found).
63. BRAKE OUT OF YOUR CAGE!
He looks pretty pleased on top of his water drain-turned cage instead of in it – we just worry about the traffic.
And the Puddy Tats.
64. Robot uprising
We don’t know if the plan all along was to fill it in, but you can see the work in progress here and here.
65. Is it hot enough for ya?
Like all of Tom Bob’s art, we’re sure it gets a lot of Instagrammers posing beside it.
66. Beware the robots
That should be enough to shake anyone out of that serene feeling.
67. “DON’T PLAY THE SAXOPHONE, LET IT PLAY YOU”
It’s tagged with the names of both Charlie Parker and John Coltrane – which one do you think it is?
68. SCUBA DIVER
Little Haiti is already a colorful place, and the residents appreciate a good street mural when they see one.
69. “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED”?
It might be giving off more of a USC Trojans vibe than a Russell Crowe glare, but either way, it’s perfectly located outside the LA Coliseum.
70. GET FIT
Chances are you’re doing them one better if you see them since they’re outside a weightlifting gym in LA.
71. SPLAT!!
This cool piece of art is on the street in Dubai – which is not normally a place we think would be inviting of graffiti of any kind.
But Tom Bob was invited with permission, so someone appreciates his aesthetic.
72. KNIGHT’S HELMET
These pieces are confined to a very cool shopping and restaurant district called La Mer.
73. MOUSE & CAT
And we can only imagine his blood pressure since he’s watched by a cat painted nearby all day.
(But you’ll have to click here to scroll through the pics to see the rest of the piece. Tom Bob’s Instagram page is just too good to miss!)
74. STRIKE!!
We’re not sure which part we like better – the meter vest or the manhole cover bowling ball.
The before photo will show you just how much imagination it requires to see a space and turn it into something new nad fun.
75. PIN WHEEL GIRL
This former exhaust fan might have made an easy pinwheel, but so many of Tom Bob’s art is just pure imagination that the rest of us might never think to transform into something new.
Looking at his pieces gives us a true appreciation of the things that real artists see that no one else can.
We love finding new creatives – especially those who work with the public in mind and make art accessible to everyone.
Concrete and metal pipes are beautiful in their own ways, but a bit of whimsy in the harsh city is bound to do your heart some good.
