Weddings are one of the most joyous occasions out there. Friends and family of the bride and groom come together to celebrate the love and unity in their holy matrimony.
Towards the end of the wedding, it is customary for the bride to toss her bouquet into the crowd of female wedding guests. According to tradition, whoever catches the bouquet will be next in line to marry.
The tradition of tossing the bouquet originally stems from England. During weddings, women would try and rip off pieces of a bride’s dress or the flowers she held to gain some of her good fortunes in finding a husband.
To escape from the crowd, the bride would toss her bouquet and slip away as the others tried to catch it.
While tossing the bouquet doesn’t necessarily hold the same meaning today, it is still a fun gesture for brides and wedding guests.
One bride by the name of Jamie Steinborn decided to take this long-time tradition and put a unique spin on it.
On May 12, Jamie married her fiancé John Stephenson at the Firefly Gardens in Midlothian, Texas.
When the moment came to toss the bouquet, excited bridesmaids and female friends gathered behind Jamie, squealing in anticipation.
The squeals grew louder as the blushing bride began her countdown from three.
However, when Jamie reached 1, she didn’t toss her bouquet. Instead, she tossed her wig.
It was a bait and switch no one anticipated, but the gesture had special significance.
Jamie tossing her wig was a courageous defiance to her 16-month-long battle with cervical cancer.
There was a moment of surprise from the crowd before everyone cheered Jamie’s triumphant toss. Her wig even got caught and waved around proudly.
Jamie still completed the classic wedding tradition. Moments later, Jamie tossed her bouquet, where the cheers were equally as thrilled as when she tossed her wig.
Jamie’s husband, John, immediately came up and embraced his beautiful and brave wife.
It was a room filled with unconditional love and support.
Congratulations to Jamie and John. Surely this is one wedding ceremony they and their guests will never forget.
