The Proust family had embarked on a peaceful boating trip on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida, during the Memorial Day Weekend.

With the boat anchored, Steven Proust, Chase’s father, was enjoying fishing, while the children played in the water, enjoying the serene surroundings.

However, their peaceful day took a frightening turn that they’ll never forget.

The tranquility was shattered when Abigail, Chase’s sister, was unexpectedly caught in a strong current.

Chase vividly described the moment, telling News4JAX:

“The current was so strong that my sister — she usually hangs out at the back of the boat — and she let go. So, I let go of the boat and grabbed her, and then, I was stuck.”

Witnessing his children in distress, Steven immediately dived into the water, hoping to rescue them.

But the powerful current proved too much, and all three were pulled away from the boat.

Making matters even more dire, only Abigail was wearing a life jacket.

Recounting the harrowing experience, Steven shared,

“I told them both I loved them because I wasn’t sure what’s going to happen. I tried to stick with her as long as I could. I wore myself out, and she drifted away from me.”

Amidst the chaos, Chase made a brave decision: he would swim back to shore to get help.

It’s hard to believe how scary that would be for a child, but all of their lives were in danger.

The journey was grueling.

For an entire hour, Chase swam, using a combination of floating and dog paddling to conserve his energy.

His determination paid off when he finally reached land and immediately sought help from the nearest house.

When questioned about his impressive swimming ability, Chase humbly replied, “I have no idea.”
