It was just another regular day for Deacon and his three siblings playing outside their Detroit house with neighborhood kids. Deacon lives with his family on the 4000 block of Taylor Street in Detroit.

Nothing could have prepared him and the other kids for what took place next.

Loose dogs appeared out of nowhere and bit Deacon’s leg

Deacon later told the media how a group of loose dogs came out of nowhere and one of the dogs bit his leg. Instead of being frightened, Deacon was concerned for his friends so he got in between them and the other kids!

It was a harrowing experience for him, however.

‘There was blood ‘everywhere’

“Deacon came hobbling in, and there were chunks of skin falling off and there was blood everywhere,” said his mom.

Although it could’ve been a lot worse, Deacon still had to undergo surgery at the Detroit Children’s Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. He will have to be on crutches for a while but it is a small price to keep his friends and family safe.

Despite facing surgery, Deacon’s only concern was for his friends and family

His dad Peter stayed at his side during the procedure and help the young hero with his recovery.

“We were really grateful, God was really good, because when you think about it on your calf, your Achilles is right there, you know. And just all the ligaments coming down, that connect. A couple of spots you can see, maybe a couple of centimeters this way or the other, and it could’ve been really dicey. That’s a serious kind of injury.”

In spite of the injury he sustained, Deacon kept a positive attitude and could not stop asking about his family.

“He was just asking ‘Hey Daddy is Kingston okay? Did Hensely and Coco make it back in the house okay? Is mommy okay?’ Here he is with a real serious injury and all he can do is think about other people.”

Thanks to Deacon’s bravery, no one else was injured that day

Things could’ve ended up a lot worse on that faithful day if Deacon hadn’t shown amazing bravery in the face of danger and sacrificed himself to protect his family and friends. His parents are proud of him and his selfless attitude.

“I think that just speaks volumes about the kind of young man he’s becoming.” his dad said.

He became everyone’s hero and an inspiration to us all.

Meanwhile, his parents have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his medical bills. This young hero definitively deserves all the help he can get!

Thankfully, the loose dogs that attacked Deacon are now off the street and can’t hurt anyone but Detroit’s stray and loose dog problem has gotten worse over the last couple of years. The city is struggling to tackle the problem. There’s no exact account of how many stray dogs roam the city streets but nearly 4200 dogs were picked up in 2019 alone.

210 dog bites were reported in 2019 and the number almost doubled in 2020. City authorities claim that most bites are caused by pets not strays.

Whatever the case, stray dogs should be housed properly in animal shelters and be given a chance to find a home of their own.
