Performances that involve children are always exciting to watch…and often funny. Most of them consist of hip-hop, jazz, or modern dance moves. Once in a great while, you might see a ballet. But seldom do you see kids dancing to polka music.
Originally, polka was a Bohemian dance. Historians say it originated in Bohemia sometime in the mid-19th century. It quickly gained popularity throughout Europe but then spread to North America. Even so, you don’t hear a lot about it unless you’re a part of a polka dance group. And you certainly don’t see young dancers on stage taking on such a complex genre.
This is the cutest thing ever.
One viral video begins with a young boy and girl walking to center stage in perfect unison. He’s dressed in white shorts, shirt, and shoes, with a black bow tie. The girl’s also wearing white in the form of a fluffy dress with a big bow adorning her head. After a small plie, the two begin polka dancing softly and without effort across the stage.
They begin to dance to lyrical music.
The pair look absolutely adorable. Then, the curtains draw back to reveal additional dancers.
This group’s wearing similar style clothes but in dark black, red, and blue. They’re also decked out in white shirts and black bow ties. The girl and boy part ways, allowing the other group to march with prance-like movements to the other side of the state.
Their polka dancing is spot on.
Every dancer has obvious talent. They twirl, slide, and intertwine their arms while performing traditional polka moves. Even as they split into two groups, one on each side of the stage, they keep their movements in perfect synchronization. At one point, they all point their toes outward, making what appears as one, flawless line.
This performance makes you feel as though you’re in a fairytale.
Between the adorable outfits and polka music, you almost feel as if you’re part of the Hanson and Gretel story, minus the evil witch. It’s all so magical. What makes this extra special is that the dance moves these kids do are usually performed by professionals with many years of experience in polka.
The video might be in Russia but the dancers reach the hearts of people from all countries.
People who’ve seen the video can’t get enough of these gifted kids. One individual wrote, “Absolutely beautiful, heartwarming, and a overdose of cuteness loved it thank you.” [sic] Another posted commented, “Beautiful footwork is amazing. Everyone in step. Loved the song too.”
Hopefully, this viral video will inspire more kids to learn how to polka.
As one poster put it, “So self-controlled (and these are children)…always the Russians. I Love to look something like that. PERFECT in every movement.” [sic].
Just because the classic polka is more popular in Europe doesn’t mean its popularity can’t grow her. This is such a special performance to watch, especially during the holiday season.
