It’s good to know our communities are teaching our young children to call for help during an emergency. Little TyLon Pittman knows that he should immediately dial 911 on the phone if there is trouble.
So, that’s exactly what he did when he saw that Christmas was in danger of being stolen by the “Grinch.”
The 5-year-old from Jackson, Mississippi had been watching “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” movie and called 911 to warn the authorities about the Grinch and his plan to destroy Christmas.
He ended up calling a few times and hanging up but when the dispatcher called back, he told her what was going on.
“Watch out for the Grinch, because the Grinch is going to steal Christmas, OK?” he tells the 911 operator, according to a recording published by the Clarion-Ledger
TyLon told the dispatcher that he wants to become a police officer then handed the phone to his confused father.
His father asked if he was playing on the phone and told the operator that his son had been watching too many cartoons.
“It’s fine, it’s fine,” the operator said. “It’s definitely been the most interesting thing that’s happened, as far as 911 hang-ups, for me.”
The dispatcher made a Facebook status that said she got a call from a kid who thought the Grinch was going to steal Christmas.
Byram Police Officer Lauren Develle heard about the post and decided to visit TyLon and reassure him that it was going to be OK.
“The Grinch is not going to come steal your Christmas. I won’t let that happen,” Develle told TyLon, according to USA Today.
TyLon told his mom that he really did believe the Grinch was coming because “he steals everybody’s Christmas” and that he would want the police to take the Grinch to jail.
But God help him if the Grinch decided to step to TyLon on his own.
“I’m going to say put your hands behind your back and get down on the ground, then when he gets on the ground, I’m gonna say, ‘Why are you stealing Christmas?’ ” he said.
TyLon ended up getting to meet the Grinch face to face a few days later. TyLon was the one who got to lock up the Grinch inside a holding cell at the Byram Police Department.
“Come here, Ty,” the Grinch while shaking TyLon’s hand. “You have saved Christmas for the people of Byram. Your bravery is unmatched. You have saved the day.”
TyLon, apparently, wasn’t buying the whole nice guy Grinch act.
“Why are you stealing Christmas,” TyLon said grilling the Grinch.
The police department was so impressed by TyLon they told him they would give him a job application when he turns 21.
