We’ve seen a lot of musical performances covering Queen’s all-time hit “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but it’s not very often that the song’s transformed into an ice-skating routine.
Attendees of the2 Canadian Synchronized Skating Championship got quite the show when the NEXXICE Senior team dazzled everyone with their take on the 70s classic. With Freddie singing in the background, it’s a captivating performance that’s unique indeed.
The British rock band Queen may have exploded into the music scene decades ago, but their songs still remain popular today – even among younger generations. One tune that will never go out of style is “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
According to The Guardian, “Bohemian Rhapsody” was awarded the title of “the most streamed song from the 20th century.” It also sits as #166 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.
With how legendary the tune is, it’s no surprise that the NEXXICE Senior skating team chose it for their performance.
The results were pure magic.
For their routine, the skaters follow along with the famous genre shifts of “Bohemian Rhapsody” beginning with the a cappella opening. Dressed in black they perform moves across the ice which are slow, graceful, and matched up to the rhythm.
Prepare to be mesmerized.
When the song changes over to Freddie Mercury’s ballad, the 16 skaters glide around the rink in a group. However, there are bigger moves to come.
After the iconic lyrics, “I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all,” four of the team members are lifted into the air in splits. The move causes the crowd to cheer in amazement.
This isn’t the first time NEXXICE Seniors have set the ice on fire with their impressive routines.
On their Facebook page, they explain:
“NEXXICE Senior Synchronized skating team is the first Canadian team in history to be crowned the title of World Synchronized Skating Champions in April 2009 and again in April 2015. In 2007, 2008 and 2016, NEXXICE earned the title of world bronze medallists and are currently the reigning 11-time National Champions.”
Get ready for another “twist.”
The opera section of “Bohemian Rhapsody” is understandably some people’s favorite part of the song. With nonsensical lyrics and impressive vocal sounds – there isn’t anything ordinary about it.
To go along with the fun nature of the music, the athletes perform moves that seem whimsical as well. They spin in repeated circles and glide together in a snake-like line, keeping everyone’s eyes glued to the ice.
Did anyone order some rock and roll?
When the rock section of “Bohemian Rhapsody” kicks in the skaters speed up as well, which causes the crowd to go wild. They certainly don’t disappoint with their ending either.
The one male skater of the group does a handstand while his fellow teammates hold his legs high in the air. It’s the perfect icing on the cake.
As Freddie Mercury once said:
“You can do what you want with my music, but don’t make me boring.”
Fortunately, the NEXXICE Senior skating team’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” performance is anything but “boring.” In fact, it’s a highly-energized routine that complements the tune in a beautiful, hypnotizing way. Surely Freddie would have been proud.
One YouTube commenter pointed out:
“16 skaters and not one mistake!!!”
