Nine Dancers But How Many Legs?
This black and white dance illusion is so stunning you will want to watch it several times over as you try to answer the same question over and over again, “ how do they do that?”
The Lights Are Down Low And The Stage Is Lit and the curtain begins to open.
The crowd waits in anticipation for what is about to come
The Entrance
Even before the entertainers have fully made it onto the stage the audience is laughing.
Slowly a line of nine men and women slide their way onto the stage in a horizontal line ever so slowly. Each dressed in a pantsuit with one-half black and the other half white. The colors are matched to the partners they are joined arms with. Right away the eyes are being tricked.
The Music Speeds Up And The Action Starts
At first, the dancers are moving side to side in perfect sync. This causes the contrast in the black and white of the costumes to look as though they are working against each other, creating an optical illusion of them being twice as many entertainers as what there really are.
Maintaining Control
To pull this off the group cannot miss a step or an action. They are linked closely together and if you look closely you can see that they have a hold of each other’s outfit. It appears as though this works as a guide for the movements they are to make.
Legs Up
The greatest effect comes when the white legs are raised in the air. It looks as though there is a body between each of the blacks. It is effective as each of the dancers lift their legs covered in white, then the same step is taken again with those dressed in the black.
It is the precision and the time throughout each move that creates the optical illusion.
Side Steps
These dancers are so good at what they do that they are able to utilize many different dance maneuvers why continuing the illusion. It is very difficult to do a side step just for two dancers, let along nine that are all linked up together.
The Little Touches
While the audience is clapping to the music so are the performers but they are putting their hands together against their partners. Again not so easy to do when they have one on each side to deal with.
A Good Time Had By All
With lots of whistles, claps, and cheers the entertainers finished their performance.
Optical Illusions
Colors combined in different ways have the ability to create different illusions and they have become very well received in this type of entertainment. It adds some extra special to the act and the dancers have to be more concerned about precision and control than they do with traditional dance steps.
